Legacy of Kain: Defiance

So I've heard this specific game is a hack n' slash.
Hey all.

So I'm a guy who recently got into this series. I've played Blood Omen and Soul Reaver all the way through, and have recently moved on to Soul Reaver 2. I was not crazy about the original Soul Reaver's gameplay (I liked the game, I just thought it was a little bit awkward in execution.), but I'm holding out hope for the future entries being better.
I've heard a common criticism of Defiance specifically is that it randomly decided to make a shift into being a hack n' slash in terms of it's gameplay. While I can totally see why this would put long running fans of the series off, I love hack n' slashes, being a huge Devil May Cry fan, so this idea honestly sounds like it could be pretty fun. My question is this: Is it a good hack n' slash, out of place in this series as it may be?

IMO, it is inferior to DMC because the combos are just not varied enough (Kain and Raziel have basically same 5 moves) and while I love DMC3 battles and enjoy them, in Defiance it falls more into the repetetive category as it goes on...

Yeah, I could sort of tell going in it wasn't going to be much like DMC3. (How would you say it compares to the original DMC?)
