Online connection is not required, this is not an always online game.

The game works offline, only Online mode and Zombie mode require online connection. More over, all prestige operatives, all purchasable clothes are available offline. Not sure if they will be available offline after purchase without checking Ubisoft servers at least once, but they're available offline after that, I checked that a long time ago.

This is not The Crew or the Division or Ghost Recon: Breakpoint MMO always online situation, this is a typical single player game with single player campaign and several co-op/online modes/missions. People are playing the game offline using Steam Deck.

Also using Cheat Engine's character editor mod you can basically backup your entire online team of operatives and recreate it to use them later in single player campaign, when Ubisoft will close the game's online servers.
