Should be a way to ask the unit to hold their position.

There is - when you move them somewhere, instead of press-and-release ctrl, just hold it for a few more seconds until some little circles show up where each unit will hold their position at

I also can't hold position. worked only in the training. never worked since.

after you can move the troops, push and hold on push the ctrl, first you will lose/release the troop movement ability and after that 1-2 sec later they will hold the position, where your character is. The trick is don't move when you want to fix the positions.

You hold ctrl when you place them not when you grab them and it is a pretty long hold.

So grab them with the large circle, then when it changes to the smaller circle after you release the ctrl key and you are in the spot you want them to stay, HOLD CTRL until the small circle poofs and leaves the small circles on the ground for each troop.

Hope this clears things up. The mechanic can be a little tricky to understand at first but it definitely works.
