Stuck at launch using proton on Linux
Hey, guys. Demo ran fine on the same system setup using proton (didn't even require any option setting or configuration in Steam), but after I bought the full version it's stuck at launch. And when it does supposedly launch successfully (you get the 'stop' option in steam) there is no system process for Thronefall running, so I'm assuming it isn't really running. Anybody else run into this? Anybody have any ideas? Thanks XD

Hi. I've started to play the game yesterday. When I start the game it crashed with an UE error as it seems it tries to run natively. When I chose Proton 8.0-3 in the settings it starts and runs without any issues.

Hi there achrilock,

Sorry you encountered this. I must say that since very little of our playerbase is on Linux, we haven't gotten that many feedbacks regarding how the game runs. Thank you for taking the time to write this.

I forwarded this to the devs, so they'll see this. We'll see what we can do.

Sorry again for the inconvenience.

Take care!

Yeah I'm having similar issues from this game only. Tried scouring every log I could find and launching from terminal but nothing gives any clue as to what's going on. Tried reinstalling numerous times and clearing the download cache several times as well. Tried different proton versions, nada. I'm stumped.

Ah, I've got the same issue (Fedora 37). It's worked once a couple of days ago, but not ever since (or before that). Running the executable directly from the command line works fine, but doesn't synchronise with Steam achievements (or playtime, for that matter).

Coincidentally, I also can't uninstall the game after trying to launch it; it just (eventually) gives a timeout error. Logging out and back in allows me to uninstall (and reinstall) the game, but doesn't solve the launching issue.

As I said, launching the executable from the command line worked for me (./Thronefall.exe); I had a real blast playing through the levels! :)

Same issue running Pop OS, also got it to run using the command line and Wine.

Running pop_os with a 7900xtx and a 5800x using proton EG and the game launches fine but I cannot get past the tutorial and have no UI. I get to the point where I build the castle but then nothing else happens and I have no way to make more coins. I'm guessing there is suppose to be an attack or there is a UI prompt that I can't see to acknowledge...
Changingtide [Linux] 18 AGO 2023 a las 8:37 a. m.
Happy to report that the UI is working with the latest patch. I was able to finish the tutorial. I've only tested the game with Proton GE and experimental and the game works on both under Pop_OS.

Sorry to hear. You should try using the latest version of Proton GE. The easiest way to install it is with ProtonUp-Qt which should be in the Mint app store. Don't forget to set the game to launch with the GE version of proton. Hope you get it working it is fun.

So happy to read this! Enjoy the game, you've earned it. :D

Take care!

There is a bug in proton >7 causing problems with generating prefixes for this game. On github issue tracker it seems that it's more related to NVIDIA than proton itself but for some reason even full AMD setups are vulnerable. Not getting much into details here is what you can try to do to fix this:

1) Your FIRST launch of the game must be with proton 7.0-6. It'll generate prefixes correctly and from here you can close the game and switch to proton 8 or experimental. Have fun.
2) But if you already have tried to launch with never proton version you are little toasted and you need to do few more steps:
- kill the game and steam processes because game/steam is probably in hang mode or better just reboot your machine.
- go to steamapps/compatdata and delete 2239150 directory.
- go back to steam and do what I wrote above in step 1)

I tried @void suggestion and it worked.

*a note to the developers, there's a protondb section for your game so you can track if any changes updates break the game for linux users.

Been using Linux exclusively for the past decade. Don't regret it at all.

Dang - I'm having this exact issue but no luck fixing it so far.
I had tried multiple different versions of Proton with no luck.
Tried @void solution, purging the game & trying with Proton 6, then again again with Proton 7. No luck :(

Well - my problem went away on its own. Think it might have been a crash related to swapping nvidia drivers to fix stuttering on a different game. After a couple reboots Thronefall ended up working with Proton Experimental on its own.
