The Dragon Claws, by contrast, only requires a basic fighting glove, a moonstone, and getting Rena's Customization to level 7, which, by using Writing or careful skill point allocation, isn't that hard. Heck, I got it by the Forest of Symbols. That's considerably earlier than the Armory Contest!
There is no comparison to Dragon Claw and Aeterna. Aeterna demolishes Dragon Claw when it comes to damage. It has double the attack power without the extra hit and it sprays glitter in the enemy's face to boot. Having Aeterna after the tourny is, in fact, way too strong. Yes, Dragon Claw is easier to make, but that's because it isn't as good.
Anyways, to answer your question based off my own experience, the most useful thing I got from ESP is putting those skill points into a different skill. ESP is literally the LAST thing I ever put points into, unless I want Mithril early.
That said, I agree that ESP in general isn't too useful, normally I ignore it(and all of the Oracle based skills), only investing one point into it during the early portions of the game to see if it turns up anything good.
Got end game weapons for 7/8 in 20 minutes and 14 goodie boxes from fishing rewards upon reaching Linga. I felt that it wasn't worth doing it any more to get all 8/8.
