In SO2, characters progress by investing skill points, gained primarily from levelling, into skills. This often does two things - grant a stat boost and contribute to the level of their item creation skills and specialities. The stat boost is usually(but not always) minor, the focus clearly is on building their ic skills and specialities so that they can create better stuff. This version also has them get battle points, which go into combat specific skills. These skills do specific things in combat, like randomly raise their damage, raise their defense and so on.
