Remember the AI is dumb and just spam moves that sucks depending on rank, amount of enemies nearby, if they miss because their target move, etc.
Simple is best for the AI.
As for caster, for caster that mostly do damage it's not a big deal IMO, and as for hybrid you might find it more convenient to disable all damage spell and manually cast them when you want to, by switching character. But damaging spells will be barely relevant as you play (beside stun, interrupt, and if you don't have 4 melee character) so it's probably not worth thinking too much about it.
That's how I remember it playing out in the ps1 and psp versions.
