games similar to this?
what are some other games that have a similar combat system to this?
i like the red glow that enemies get so you know when you're supposed to dodge, but i cant help but feel like i must've seen it somewhere else
(i know metal gear rising has something similar)

what are some other games that have this kind of "dodge now" type of thing?

If you can endure the fact that the party consists of a trio of little girls and are ok with something a little different then there's this.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/203510/Fortune_Summoners/

It's gameplay feels like a cross between tales of phantasia and Link 2 from the nes days.

The game has a demo as well.

Play Valkyrie profile. It’s the same designer and shares a few of the boss battles/music and has the same distinctive storyline style

Important context on this is that it was intended to be part 1 of a trilogy that never panned out (which should sound familiar to SO fans).

Yeah, but the story is still self-contained (as in, it has an actual ending point). It's a shame that the sequel hooks were never followed up on. The backstory is actually pretty interesting.

Not surprised it didn't pan out for the dev though. The game is too girly (or at least appears so, it's actually pretty funny) for the hardcore and too hardcore for the casual (as in, the gameplay is legit challenging).

I still say it's worth it if only for the unique and fun gameplay.

Also ni no kuni wrath of the white witch has a worse story and combat is worse than this star ocean second story r but it has fast travel and a ! story pointer just like this game, just saying :).
It's a completely different game other than having an anime art style?
Not true, it uses the ! pointer to tell you where to go to continue the story which this game uses as well, that's I was really getting at, plus like I said the combat in ni no kuni was not as good, plus it has the same game mechanic of going from town to town, to say it is completely differen't isn't completely right, but okay whatever you think is fine I just don't see it like that...

Trails in the Sky series, especially the first few entries, have that old school feel.
How do you dodge in Trails in The Sky lol? it's a turn based game :lol_tk:.

This isn't really an asnwer to "this type of dodge" question, but more of an answer to the title.
With that said many of theses games do something similar with dodges.

Star Ocean games
IMO 2 is the peak of the series, but 3rd and 4th games might still be worth playing. 5 and 6 feel uninspired.

Crosscode
This is a game almost every jRPG fan will appreciate.
It definitelly has blocking and dodging (real time combat, with combos), but I don't recall if there's a "flash" to indicate dodge timing. I think there's one for blocks maybe.

Tales of ... games
2 things to note: These games start slow and ease you into you most of the tools available later in game. First hour or 2 can feel like a slog. 2nd thing is these games make casters good (you can cast and wait or you can cast at the end of a combo for faster/stronger spell). It's one of few games in this genre where playing a caster doesn't feel like a chore.

If you have something that can run those games Tales of Abyss and Tales of Graces F (not just "Graces") are the most mechanically involved versions of those games. Those are the peak of classical formula (Arise seems to be be different). Tales of Xillia (1 and 2) is also okay.

PC
  • Tales of Zesteria uses rock-paper-scissors type of elemental combat (dumbs down the gameplay IMO).
  • Tales of Berseria is very spammy in comparison, but probably the best of classical formula if you can't play Abyss/Graces F.
  • Tales of Arise - didn't play it yet, won't comment too much, but from what I hear it's a different take on combat

Ys games
I would suggest looking over the entire series. Early games are pure action (no RPG). At some point they start leaning more into RPG side (I think Ys 7 is the golden age hybrid).

Odin Sphere: Leifthrasier
2D action RPG. The way this game works makes it one of a kind. Worth a try.
Odin Sphere (without Leifthrasier in the title) is an older version that isn't as good.

The world ends with you
Original is amazing and on Nintento DS. I'd try it, because there's nothing else like it on the market.
Neo is a VERY different game. Might be worth checking out, since you're into that genre.

Final Fantasy
Forgot if any of them have dodges, but all of them had memorable combat systems.
  • Type 0 (whatever the newest version is)
  • CRISIS CORE –FINAL FANTASY VII– REUNION
  • Strangers of paradise
FF15 combat is cool, but as jRPG it lacks almost everywhere else.

Games too old for me to remember
PS1, PS2, Gameboy advance, Nintendo DS and maybe nintendo 3ds has a bunch of titles that were fun.
Kingdom Hearts 3
Tales of Phantasia is the closest game to this
Play Valkyrie profile (ps1/psp version). It’s a different style game but the same designer and made just after this. The same deep character storytelling and dynamic combat make it another very special game

I agree with Ys VIII, Tales of Berseria, and Fortune Summoners (underrated gem!)
Suidoken series . this is the one that i am extremely waiting for
This is the best Indie RPG I've played recently, I like it a lot better than Sea of Stars, or Chained Echoes:

Yep, please play this.
Also:

It's similar enough to this, full map movement, killer moves, combos, dodge mechanics. And mages are actually good in this game.
