ATK doesn't help mages unless you plan on and having them run up and smack mobs with their weapon. INT doesn't seem to effect melee fighters at all (Unless there are some obscure Killer Moves that use INT, that I don't know about).
Breaking Shields is more dependent on the type of skill you use. Melee have "Break-focused" skills that deal more damage to shields. All mage spells are "Balanced" which is in-between Break-focused and HP-focused attacks.
There is also a Factor called "Break-Up" that can appear on accessories. This increases the character's shield damage by 10%.
