Best way to Boost Defense? (semi-spoiler)

Currently on the planet Nede and everything is doing so much damage. I'm dealing damage no problem, but the Bosses just straight up 2-3 shot most of my party members.

WITHOUT Using any Bloody armor pieces, what are ideal ways in boosting your character's defense via Gear wise.

Accessories that increase defense by a percent, defense buffs from spells/items.

Alternatively, fast healing skills like healing star or Sword of Life.

Also, certain skills can increase a characters defensive ability. Ernest and Precis in particular have abilities that can make them more defensive (with an added bonus for Precis that she can do great damage while using said skill).

Was talking more Gear-wise in terms of better defense (edited my post).

Once you can freely travel, there's a small island in the snowy area that has a vendor on it. You can buy a Magical Rasp there.

Use that with Blacksmithing for the best armor you can have before the post-game stuff. For example, Blacksmith + Magical Rasp + Orichalcum can get you Reflecting Plates, which have great defense, have petrification immunity, and 1/2 all elemental damage, if I'm remembering correctly. Do that with various materials to get armors for your different character types.

I can't really think of them off the top of my head besides the ring of sadness, which adds a whopping 30% (at a huge cost to attack).

There's others, I'm sure. There's also gear factors that focus on defense.

There's others, I'm sure. There's also gear factors that focus on defense.

There are accessories that reduce dmg taken by physical or magical attacks by 90% but have a 5-10% chance of breaking per battle. You could put those on for those fights. Unsure if they can break mid battle. They aren't hard to craft either.

You can also try the Upper Formation which grants a large defensive boost, guts, and status immunity. Not sure, yet, if there are even better defensive formations.

This one is extremely overpowered though. On Universe it can make enemies that 3-5 shot you drop to 0 dmg or at least double digit usually. Even on the raid boss thief if you do it before going to new continent it drops its 8k+ dmg down to 4K with that and some defensive accessories.

You can also consider food, too.
