The Playstation original had better graphics
The sprites models in this version are horrendous and extremely exaggerated pixel style compared to the original. The new 3D backgrounds make this even more jarring.

Almost everything visually about this remake sucks compared to the OG.

Damn... They should've made all 3 versions available. They all look pretty good.

And no, these are proper upscaled hence you can see the pixels, if you want literally trash upscaling, see the Grandia 1 remaster and Chrono Trigger on Steam.

Haven't played Chrono Cross and Grandia 1 despite owning both on Steam. Is it really that bad? Heard both doesn't run well on Steam Deck
Have a look:
Grandia 1:

Chrono Trigger on Steam:

It's all smoothered to crap and the pixels are lost.
But I wonder if some genuine trolls will say these look better LOL.

It's not possible because they are more like 3 different games altogether. This isn't a matter of changing portraits (which is actually possible in this game), changing backgrounds and maps are huge matter.
Grandia 1
1st imagine looked fine
2nd looks off

Ooo I messed up Chrono Cross and Trigger lulz
I did play it and it was way off
REhorror Nov 5, 2023 @ 7:51pm
For Grandia 1, they straight out used some filter to straighten out the sprites, this leads to the classic emulation problem where pixels blend into each other, making the characters looking like water painting constantly changing shapes.

This is why keeping the pixels look is the best, it gives the character weight and much more freedom for expression since our eyes are trained to look at pixels since birth.

Never mind the trolls tho.

Correct.
As much as I don't like the PSP version for other reasons (like the character portraits), they actually managed to make the sprites look pretty good. I'm assuming they used something like bilinear filtering to give them a slightly smoothed look without being too blurry.
Very recently I played the PS1 version on an emulator with bilinear filtering and it looked similair.
In this version, however, the sprites appear extremely blocky, almost like they are even lower resolution than the original. They also have the same problem as the FFVI remaster sprites, in that the contrast is off, leaving the sprites looking bright and washed out.
Before anyone says they are the same sprites as the original, they are CLEARLY not. They are redrawn voxels, not a rip of 2d images.

I wouldn't be upset if they increased the pixels a little, but I understand and respect the choice they went with. After the first hour you stop noticing and start enjoying the game.

You can't be serious if you think the PSP blurred hell of sprites look good.

So much details and pixels are lost.

Hell, to make it look good, you have to play it on an emulator, with increased internal resolution + filter, which ironically makes it look like this version.
That looks like... Nostalgia CRT TV graphics imo

It doesn't matter what you think is not possible. Other developers have already proven this possible by releasing games that often provide the original with their remastered variant, whether it be emulation or recreation.

So what you meant to say is: "I don't know anything and I should just stop pretending I do."

Not really, you are sounding like a Karen right now.

All three versions looks great in different ways.
Always loved this game, and they nailed this remake.
There's perhaps 3 npc's in the game for which it looks genuinely wrong because of the camera angle, otherwise it's just fine and I wouldn't have wanted to have it any other way.
If you're off-put by legacy sprites, then perhaps playing a remake of a 25 years old game is the problem, not the remake itself. ;p

Source on this ? Cause they're clearly 2d texture on flat plane, referring to those 3 NPC's that look odd I mentioned earlier. Edit: If you need pictures, I'll go get them.

Edit: Also, here's a comparison I did in image editing software: https://puu.sh/JTT59/2a487a867b.gif

Upper body looks a bit more stretched now, but that's how you'd expect anything to look when deformed by perspective while looking from above, and the colors are slightly different due to the lighting system. Looks the same to me otherwise ?

There's some games that can afford to do that, like diablo 2, because they're only running on pc, and both games still run on any modern system, easy to run Diablo 2 in parallel with the remake so you can swap with both.

You're asking Square enix to make a PS1 game available for PC, switch, PS4 and PS5, then do the same thing with a PSP game, and for what benefit ? People aren't here to play the PSP version, and if you want to play that, am sure you can dust off your old console or emulate it. I think you're the one that doesn't know what you're asking for, should probably remain polite at least if you're gonna speak out of your ass with this much entitlement.

It's a bit of a mix for me. Some things look better but other things do look a bit more generic than they used to. Buildings for instance have this very "asset" store looking feeling to them and lack some of the finer details that made the original pre-rendered backgrounds stand out. On the other hand, I think the world map itself looks beautiful and the new effects added to the characters themselves.
