So why did they only do Half the job of a graphics update?
I really love the new detailed backgrounds and modern look, but the original sprite work just... doesn't fit with it. They were great for their game...but this is Not that game. Why can't we have character models like some of the more modern titles to fit with the Modern environments.

Seems lazy.

Sea of Stars has pixel graphic character models, but they look good. They could have easily done the same thing here..

It fits like a glove actually.
Have you even played the game?

Everything looks like a classic game but in a newer graphics setting.

play the original
i dare you

I have played the game both the original and the this one. if they had kept the original graphics I would of been ok, if they had made proper 3d characters instead pixel sprites I would of been ecstatic.

This mix is... frankly upsetting. the Color pallets don't even seem to match with the background it's like I have a rich full color environment, and washed out 2d crappy sprites to run around with.

LOL, the game would look 100% horrible with SOVLess 3D character models.
Squeenix actually did many of the 3D remakes before, and none turn out well.

Yeah, the Chrono Trigger and early Final Fantasy games that got an "art upgrade" were almost universally panned. This is a nice middle ground.

Game looks incredible, I'd love to see some of the 2d Tales games get the same treatment tbh. Hell, just give us a pc port of the ToD remake

Tales of Eternia 2D-HD would be a dream coming true for me...

It's not laziness, it's a purposeful decision to maintain some of the charm/nostalgia of the og.
I feel they would've had much more of a pushback if they changed the models.
There's some uncanniness from some angles like.. I encountered 2 of these situations in 10 hours ? It looks generally fine.
If they wanted to be lazy with this product, they wouldn't have remade all of the backgrounds in 3d and sprites of characters from other games in 2d. Making the character models in 3d is just a hop skip away from that, probably takes less time to do a character than a couple environments, so clearly they wanted it like this and am alright with it, it definitely feels like OG SO2, and 3d models would've stripped a layer away from that. I feel this is a sentiment most who hold the OG dear will have.
If they wanted to be lazy with this product, they'd have served us a port of the psp release, and we would've probably been happy with that. ;p

It fits VERY well which is great.

In the original and the PSP version, the sprites constantly clashed with the background which were... let's just say the art did not work too well and was pretty flat due to tech constraints. You not seeing that is likely due to nostalgia googles.

And its not "half the job" as they also reconstructed the special effects from the ground up and even added new ones in. Even the reflections and shadows have been newly introduced and boy do they add quite a lot to the overall feel. If anything, the sprites are like 5% of the graphics in terms of work put in.

As a new player of this game, I'm a bit confused. Are the playable character sprites new or are they recycled from previous versions of SO2?

They are the original sprites, upscaled and given more animations (the characters have various idle animations).
There are also legit new sprites from characters not originally in the game (like the cameo characters from SO6).

2D sprites are back and they are the present and future.

its not simply exported over too, theres new sprite animation for each cahracter that doesnt exist in original ones..

i mean the sprite in this game is much better choice than something like ff6 ios port that looks like some kind of vector flash animation that just doesnt fit

Yep, they are very animated, it's crazy.
Look at the old man sprite walking, it's impressive as heck.

I am surprised you guys don't know how to emulate games. Well, not everyone can be resourceful I suppose lol. There is a lot of games like this one, free to play and the graphics meshed well instead of this half ass 3d sprite stuff.
