How is SO2R different than the original?
I played the original Star Ocean 2 on the Play Station and it was great. How is this so called remake any different?

from my findings so far and this is only compared to the PS1 version (not PSP)

- background are fully 3D and they are gorgeous
- rearranged BGM (but yoiu have option to choose the OG one)
- fully Voice acted
- portrait for important NPC, including the bosses that never got em previously (you can choose the PSP or PS1 portrait for your party members if you prefer too)
- your party members (that participate in battle) follow you around instead of just Claude and Rena in overworld
- cutscenes are remake from scratch with addition some new ones
- most char skills are rebalanced like increased aoe, faster skill, especially spellcasters, some are nerfed but v little
- battle system are changed a bit, w dodge mechanic, breaking enemy gauge and battle buffs, formation now give different buffs and stats too
- new assault mechanic where your 5th-8th slot members can jump in to help, there are also some cameos from other SO series that can be put into this slot
- new elite enemies feature that can buff other enemies
- reserve members getting exp
- getting paralysed doesnt gameover you
- option to retry a battle when gameover
- some other QOL like in game map, skipping cutscenes, dialogue, spell cutscenes, even PAs, or simply fastforward text, accessing PA without leaving town
- new optional boss fights in overworld
- combo link are no longer equipment (thank god)
- enemies can be seen on overworld (so can be avoided), battles can also be chained if they are close w each other for extra bonuses
- your party members talk and had dialogue in overworld
- FAST TRAVEL
- missable quest and PAs can be seen on map
- new playable character Welch (which is from the PSP version)
- new fishing minigame and specialty
- Fun city cooking game has been remade
- new Item creation that give stats for equipment (like a factor that give passive to eqs)
- new group specialties like allowing ur active members to kill weaker enemies in overworld
- item creation are friendlier with a list of possible items combination (they will be shown as ???? until you created them)
- new idle animation for your characters (i think they are new at least i dont rmb them in PS1)

im still at energy nede but those are what i notice from back of my head

Thanks, I may consider getting this when it's on sale. This is in no way a $50 game; especially when it's just a reskin with a few alterations. The only remake I thought it worth the price was Final Fantasy 7 Remake. I paid more than $50 for it, on the play station 4, and it was definitely worth it.

I think so far the price is ok considering the amount of changes, but yes i maybe bias since i love this game as a child

i even bought this game as a gift for my friend just due to how happy i am w the remake so far

Star Ocean 2 was on the list of snes/ps1/2 generation of JRPGs I will automatically pick up in hopes the trend continues, until I get a remake/remaster of Xenogears, Suikoden 5, Grandia, Earthbound, and Super Mario RPG.

FF7R is definitely isn't worth more compared to this game. It's 1/3 of a game, while Star Ocean R is a full game. FF7R is only disc 1 content of FF7, while FF7 Rebirth is the 2nd disc with altered story.

FF7R is definitely worth it, it's a new game built from the ground up, modernized with a AAA budget. This game is more of a lower budget revamp in the same vein as Crisis Core Reunion was. FF7R may not cover the entirety of the original story, but nor was it trying to, and it expands on the Midgar portion to a 40+ hours story experience (100+ if you do everything), so it's a full game by every means. Only the delusionals think they can make 500+ hour game and maintain the same graphical fidelity through out for a mere $60-70 price tag. I imagine Rebirth will be 200+ hours to do everything, and that's realistically already pushing expectations above and beyond a normal game of this magnitude.

Are there still unwinnable battles?

Yes. First battle with the 10 wise men is still unwinnable; got over 600 hits on him for 0 damage before it ended. Plot armor is thick.

Still think this is the best remake a JRPG could ever have to satisfy both nostalgic boomers and newcomers. Yet still doesn't justify the inflated price tag though.
valium Nov 3, 2023 @ 7:03pm
$50 is standard for new games, even in the 90s. Be glad they didnt go with the new standard of $70.

Should have clarified, for PC.

I just got Laeticia from SO6, wow, so they make new sprites too.

That should be a bonus, more character cameos from the other game.
