Did they fix HIS name?
You know who I mean.

The guy's name is INDALECIO. Not "gabriel" or whatever they changed it to. Terrible.

Because if they fixed his name, then it's truly nostalgia, and I'll relish putting it on him after so many decades.

Which means.....tear into pieces!!
Pear into Peaches! :P

I personally enjoy stuff like that, the old voice lines where you could mishear them so easily.

His name is Dr Lantis and he's pissed cuz Biden limited his price.
This topic is satire. The guy doesn't really believe what he's saying. But he put his avatar as Alisa's rack to claim that Alisa is a badly written character like his post (personally I think she's written ok and is hot).

Something I never would've expected 20+ years ago, when the fan translation community was still figuring out what it cared about, was the rise of the "localization is more canon than the source material" cult in the western gaming world.

People who were raging about whether or not they could change Aerith back to Aeris and then pretending it was anything more than a "don't touch my precious memories" tantrum.
They could be legit trolls.

The PSX version sometimes named him Gabrie. Then you have Iseria Queen.

It's funny for me. Because it is a common name here (with familiars too), Indalecio - Indalo (From San Indalecio, Almería, Spain) But well, we have even a town called Enix...

The fact remains that his name was changed to Indalecio in the english translation and this translation fixed that. It's not because of religious symbology because there's a boss in the original called Gabrie Celeste who is clearly a celestial being. If they wanted to avoid religious icons, they failed hard. It was most likely an arbitrary decision.

Gabriel (ガブリエル, Gaburieru?), known as Indalecio in the original English translation, is the leader of the Ten Wise Men, the doomsday weapon of the group, the tenth and final Wise Man to be created and the primary antagonist of Star Ocean: The Second Story.

I'm assuming they redid translation from the original JP script, they didn't "update" the translation that was there.

They only made up some name because of ♥♥♥♥♥♥ rules back in the day not letting them put up "biblical"names and other things.

So, going by your way of thinking, spell "Holy" in ff games (andsubsequent re-releases) should stay as "White", "Fade" or "Pearl"? xd
The exact same reason as Gabe had them cross out holy, cause it reminded some people too much about christianity, mate

You are so very wrong. Let me explain a bit why.

There has never been a rule like you are suggesting. I can make a game that has nothing but religious context, and never worry about anything.

You know why? Nobody has rights over that stuff. Literally nobody. I can make a game with the char named Jesus... whos going to sue me for copyright? You are aware religions cant be copywritten yes?

So, the rules you are talking about, wasnt a rule, it was people worried about reaction from others. Which is a fair thing to worry about, as we can see it play out in real time now, what happens when someone slights another group.

Gabriel itself, isnt even a religious name, until you add religious context to make it so.
You're equating company rule to government law. Nobody said anything about being sued. Western publishers in the 90s refused to publish games with religious references, and they had a standing rule with developers to not put any in their games; if your game had religious references and you weren't willing to change them, then your game wouldn't get published in the west.

The name Gabriel is not religious. However, when it gets paired up with names like Michael and Metatron, it becomes an obvious reference to the angels. It had to be changed in the 90s, and now in current year it doesn't. It's as simple as that.

Regardless of what's right or wrong, Indalecio is definitely a cooler name than Gabriel.

Yeah, but it's not his canon name. ;p

You are correct, companies do have the right to work with who they want. However, who has the right to judge another based on what they create?

You see the problem with the narrative you are supporting right? It leaves a huge door open that companies can abuse to no end. "If you put that in, we wont publish", which is just high end bullying tactics to be quite honest.

This is also why we have so many indie games these days, because publishers are simply useless roadblocks that dont serve a purpose anymore, BECAUSE of the exact reasons you said above. Why be beholden to some joker at a company, when you can answer to yourself instead?

As for the name? It really depends on the context behind the person doing the naming. I mean, Adolf isnt a nazi name, but you can be pretty sure nobody will name their kid that in the foreseeable future. Except that one weirdo that had his kids taken away.

@Anyone actually named Adolf - I am so sorry your parents did that to you...

I agree with everything you just said. Hardware producers back in the day were indeed bullies with no accountability. We definitely live in a different world now than we did 25 years ago.

They changed the names of some of the 10 Wise Men (I guess?) to not offend religious people. Although I think Lucifer is pretty spot on for his role in this game, because he's a twisted evil SOB.

They changed every single name of Ten Wise Men

Marsilio -> Zaphkiel
Shigeo -> Jophiel
Berle -> Metatron
Jibril -> Raphael
Nicolus -> Camael
Ruprecht -> Zadkiel
Decus -> Michael
Vesper -> Haniel
Cyril -> Lucifer
Indalecio -> Gabriel

Personally liking the original EN translation since they sounded more original. The new names just sound like "forced" Angelic names, despite them being the main antagonists
Terra 2023 年 11 月 16 日 下午 6:19
For what it's worth, I also think Indalecio is a cool name.
