Enix alone was superb.
Squaresoftr aloen was superb.
The combination of the two only produced mediocre stuff like FF12 and onwards.
Edit: ♥♥♥♥, I thought you were talking about 14 lol.
TIL: FF12 was mediocre 🤣🤣.
It's one of the best, brother and sister.
Nah, Dragon quest VIII was pretty good.
I remember seeing that opinion a lot online a few years ago, then it seems with the re- release that the general opinion has shifted. I've always thought the game was just boring. Boring story, largely boring cast with an awful protagonist, and a boring world.
It was easily my least favorite mainline game in the series until FF XV came in and said "Hold my beer"
FFXII is a really good game with a pretty forgettable protagonist. Better than 8 and 10 at the very least.
12 wasnt bad, but its part of the Zodiac line. So you KIND of have to play through FFT before it to fully grasp its world.
Also, 14 was the MMO... Which is nothing like any of the others in the series at all.
Ivalice Alliance games were great though, they have better worldbuilding than stand alone FF games.
I believe it is because it literally rode off the Final Fantasy branding name despite clearly not being a Final Fantasy game at all, much as you expressed with regards to story / cast / protag- jk doesn't have one / failed romance handling / etc.
The game, itself, has its perks which is probably why years later after people got over the initial bs of the game's naming stunt from the dev basically scamming their core fans they're okay with the good sides of the game (depending on individuals taste). This is why some of the more objective reviews and opinions back then simply classified it as a "game that was decent and would have received less hate if it had its own name instead of trying to piggyback off Final Fantasy".
