I don't like the new graphics, here's why
The new environment graphics are pretty good for what they are, but man it looks so muddy and ugly when you put the original character sprites up against them with the lighting.

I get that they didn't wanna make new character models to keep the nostalgic look, but I mean there were better ways of doing the new graphics. They should've either made it look closer to Octopath Traveler or perhaps make entirely new 3D models, that were stylized after the game's original graphics. That new Super Mario RPG remake that just got announced did exactly what I just described. Hell, if they really wanted to try something new, they should've dug up the 3D models they digitized for the background environments in the original.

All new graphics are perfectly fine, it's just the fact they kept the original pixelart which contrasts so heavily against everything is just, no no it's not good.

It's perfectly fine. It is ideal even.

Not a fan either to those pixels models for a "remake" but to each their own

it is the kind of subject where arguing is absolutely useless and that's good

not even 3D models, just have sprites that you can't count pixels on fingers smh. I think it's ridiculous how much effort they put in the high quality environments and then made the characters and enemies more pixelated than on PSP. these sprites are uglier than those in Disgaea 1 and 2
also the camera tilt makes them look like cardboard cutouts which I hate, good 2d models still give you an illusion of volume

I'm talking about characters looking worse than in PSP version? having trouble reading or what?

How do they look worse than the PSP version when they're the exact same sprites in all three versions of the game? Are you mistaking the PSP version's sprite smoothing for more detail?

I really like the design, the old school sprites in SO2 are amazing and seeing them placed into a 2.5D world is lovely.

Lets face it, if they used updated 3D models there would be a legion of angry people, you can't make everyone happy but I suspect the fans of the original will mostly be happy.

I agree, honestly. I just wanted Second Evolution R. Should've been easier to localize that than make a whole ass other new version... The Second Evolution gameplay looks more visually cohesive/natural, while this new project looks like it's going for Octopath style, but clearly not being worked on by the Octopath folks. I'll take it though.

It's weird to me that with the rest of the game environments looking like that, they would insist that the character sprites look like THAT. On top of such high quality drawn (and animated) portrait art, and seemingly fully voice acted. They animate well, but I think there needs to be just a little bit higher pixel density especially when there are frequent close-up shots. Perhaps it's an opportunity for modders to step in? First Departure R sadly never got a PC version

They look alright, it's not as bad as those pure brown overdone postprocessing octopath games at least.

It's quite a large job updating pixel art and not ruining it, I think that's why they often go this route... I'd really only be happy if they hired pros to do it, but remasters are usually 3rd party and cheap labor.

@ shylaar ......... Dude, h4zelnut did not mention the word detail at all, your putting words in his mouth. He is not mistaking anything. He is talking about what you think he is mistaking for detail. He is saying the sprites arent as smooth/more modern looking in this newer version in comparison to the psp version, which not only has smoother sprites, but more animations for the sprites hair it seems and the hair flows more naturally from the looks of it too.

But ya, i can see why some people would not be happy with, what appears to be, an exact copy of the sprites from the original playstation release. It would be nice if square at least allowed an option to switch between the original sprites and something more modern/smoother looking like the psp version.

I agree with you. The backgrounds and environments look great but the sprites are just too pixelated. They have obviously spent a lot of money on this so why not make some new sprites that look faithful to the original? Heck make it an option to switch so people who want the originals can still do so.

I doubt it would add that much to the cost of the game

I'd like it alot more if the game didnt have crazy lighting. The sprites looks so blown out with white light in alot of the shots in the trailer.

honestly this. I'd be able to look past the jarring contrast between character and world art if I could actually look at the screen for more than 5 minutes without a headache. then my only real gripe would be with how handling the psynard looked in the trailer
