Which means obviously high end desktop cards will not be fully pushed. But you can't avoid this - anything that truly pushes high end desktop cards will just crash or run <5fps on mobile phones, hurting result precision.
That is also why Steel Nomad will have to do two versions of the scene (normal and light) - even the light one will be hard for phones and the normal version will not work on phone hardware anytime soon.
It is a nice additional slice for the budget when someone sponsors a test and it gave some marketing support in China (Lenovo promoting the partnership there) but no way we could have released the test for free just on that sponsorship. The deal probably was missing one extra zero for that.
And it is very likely there will be paid additional tests in the future as well.
If you look at the timeline here:
https://benchmarks.ul.com/support/3dmark-updates-and-upgrades
Roughly once every 2-3 years there has been a paid upgrade to 3DMark. I see no reason why this model would not continue. It is still far better way for the customers than the old system where every 2 years or so a new full price 3DMark was released (3DMark03, 05, 06, Vantage, 11...) and the only benefit for existing customers was that new product was available 50% off if you owned the previous one. Development costs money and while industry also chips in (thru membership fees in 3DMark Benchmark Development Program), it cannot fund it alone. Also the fact that end user revenue from Advanced Edition licenses and Upgrades is a major part of the funding ensures that the test cannot be "taken over" by industry requirements. We are very serious about being impartial and fair, and this requires that the funding is not concentrated in a way that would allow any one party to dictate anything.
I'm waiting to, lol.
