Steel Nomad feel "lacking"?
Compared to previous benchmarks I am left feeling like Steel Nomad is a bit lacking. Am I the only one?

i am stuck at initializing so i don't know what you are reffering to.. :(

Seems fine to me for graphics, though if the intent was to replace Time Spy as the lead DX12 benchmark there might also have been a CPU test included.

This is UL's response to that.

I wasn't aware of that -- thanks much...

Yeah, it does - 100%. It feels like they're running just the 'demo' and assigning some formula to convert FPS to score, and it's not the full thing just yet.

Well, we had feedback from previous tests that they were too long and people didn't like that the demo had to be disabled for faster testing. So this time the demo is replaced by the addition of a soundtrack and some extra work went into the explorer mode that works as a demo of sorts that you can control yourself.

So now the test for peak performance is as quick and painless as possible and if you want sustained performance testing, the stress test is available.

Thanks for the effort, Jarnis - but you realise you just can't win, right?? :lunar2019grinningpig:

I guess so. Have a short time-efficient benchmark test and those who want a longer experience dislike it. Have a longer test with a demo and those who want quick efficient testing for a score dislike it...

It's to short for me, was shocked when it ended so quickly. I thought it had crashed. Could make it longer but.......

What I would like to see 3dmark devs would be to make a classic bench of 3dmark 99 2000 and 2001 tests, but make them rayrtaced. Or insanely high poly and redone for modern cards with all the music.

I liked it. The graphics had a 3dmark feel to them, yes it might have been a little short, but it runs good, and tells a story. Most of 3dmark's single test benches and feature tests aren't that long except for Port Royal. With Timespy and Firestrike there were multiple tests that ran and I kinda miss the cpu and gpu combined test of some of those past benchmarks. All in all it's a good addition to the rest of 3dmark's test.

I prefer shorter demo times too. Loop it if you want a stress test.

It does feel sudden. Not just that it's short, but where it cuts off. The guy parks at some kind of bounty hunter camp, scrolls through the bounties, sees that one of the bounties is for them and suddenly the whole camp gets ready to attack... and it just ends at that. Feels like it was over before it even started.

(Also, what kind of a security system somehow is unable to tell a wanted person is in the area until they manually not only access the bounty database but specifically scroll to their own bounty listing?)

Though it was free so I don't have that much of an issue.

Now speedway, THAT one felt very lacking considering that one is $5 and it's another situation of "it barely started" before it ends. The whole benchmark is her hoverbike thing being tuned up, and as she's about to take off... it ends. You have a benchmark called Speed WAY but there is no actual "way" in the benchmark. It even feels like it teases you since you see a hologram of a track in the workshop and a crazy looking track outside the shop's windows, didn't even have additional tests like the previous ones did.

You folks do a great job. I was shocked at how fast the test was over as I hadn't seen or read anything to warn me that it was streamlined and shorter than previous tests.

I only have one lament that I've carried with me since 2005, and that is the forlorn wish that some of the tests actually existed as playable games!
Master Anyon May 26, 2024 @ 4:25pm
I understand the struggle with balancing between a long test and a short test. I would have loved a longer test myself as the world feels like there is so much potential to unpack that it feels almost sad this is all there is. I could totally see a Borderlands-esque meets something like Biomutant come out of this. But I do want to say, what the devs were willing to give to me for free was a very visually appealing graphics benchmark that was fun to traverse. A hearty Thank you go out to the devs for this nice chunk of content!

152 hours here. Thank you for making a bench I don't have to remember to disable the demo for.

Can't wait for the linux client.
