Peoples first base location, and why.

I chose to put my first base in North Africa because after building 2 more radar stations I was able to cover both north and south africa, the middle east, europe (except for iceland), as well as parts of the soviet union and indochina.

So what I want to know is where other players chose their first base, and why it was a "better" location than the location I chose.

I built my very first base in Africa as well for global coverage. Build as many world wide bases as you can when the funding resourses become avaiable and reseach also should be a priority. More bases the happier the world nations seem to be and then funding improves.

(Doing the building with funding balance is key to success....)

For me I was "required" to put a second and third base in australasia and south america. They were not my primary choices but even after the first month they had both dropped their funding by $57k each so I wanted to get some radar and interceptors there pretty quickly.

The Middle East.

The aliens were drawn to Earth because it's primarily a water planet. While they're frolicking and splashing each other on the beach with their gummy sectoid hands I'm juryrigging tanks out of scrap from Operation Desert Storm.

I went Middle East as it looked to cover all of Europe, most of Russia and most of Africa when you have all three radars built. That is coverage of many of the funding nations to start.

I think most people choose North Africa as it provides the greatest chances for UFO interceptions/missions. I always thought it would be nice for a geo-political mod to make funding levels more appropriate given the 1970's time frame. Would put negatives for the North Africa base as funds would be much lower and other areas would be more attractive.

I have always put my bases in Africa at first.
This is just habit after I always used to do the same in XCOM so I would have more desert battles.

West Yougoslvia on the coast I got all of the EU and western Russia with most of North Africa and the Middle east.

Just north of the Soviet union border in greece roughly croatia. My knowledge of nations in that area is pretty poor. Turns out it's too high and my radar hits the top of the map at 3.

I built my 1st base in southern Italy, more or less at the same coordinates of the city of Taranto . I decided to do so for 2 reasons: 1st it gives almost complete coverage over Europe (Iceland is not included), it gives coverage over Sahara desert and almost all the middle east, good coverage of Russia reaching as far as the Caspian sea; 2nd reason is that Taranto is an IRL military base, I like the idea of building my bases on IRL army/naval base locations.

Greece, Can cover north africa all of europe a good chunk of russia. Just makes sense.
