1. Guard, soldier attempts to hold a position and only moves if enemies come close
2. Patrol, soldier moves towards an area and holds ground
3. Roamer, soldier moves towards an area which is likely to have an enemy
Do note that all aliens do (hidden) call for backup, which will attract nearby aliens. So the second you make a patrol soldier notice you, don't be surprised when all the roamers bum rush too.
Either they pop out and burst my guy in the face or their reaction fire blast my guy. In the last mission I had an alien use a grenade on me with my guys clustered in the middle area with the 3 doors.
So thinking of using some heavy fire power to take out that wall layer and then pick them off from the doorway.
If you don't like being forced through a set UFO layout to confront them, I suggest going to the Xenonauts forum. There are two mods available there, both from a dedicated modder named Kabill, that will allow you to 1) randomize the UFO interiors or 2) breach the enemy hulls with a special charge and enter at unexpected points of your choosing
Or if you have some high reflex high TU characters, put carbines on them and do hit and run attacks on the aliens inside by shooting once and running back outside.
