Is there a way to blow a hole in a UFO Hull?
I've tried 5 consecutive blasts on the same spot on a UFO hull with C4 with no noticable effect. Doors are destroyable. Do I need more powerful expolsives (or more C4) or it is impossible to breach a hull?

No.

You might find this mod[www.goldhawkinteractive.com] interesting.

In an unmodded game the hull is indestructible. (that and bedrock walls/room seperating walls in bases should be the only thing in the game that is)

The mod VPraetor linked is most likely a mod that changes the specters for the UFO hull to make it destructible in certain places.

Some more questions:
Are the walls inside a UFO destructable in un-modded game (I know doors can be destroyed)?
The Fire in the Hole mod has breachable hulls - but only in some hull places. Can guns be used or does the hull have to be breached by the Breaching Charge?
Can this mod be added and an existing save game continued or would starting a new game be required?

-No walls are not destructuble
-No you can't use gun,it can only be breached by breaching charge
-Yes you can and you don't need to start new game.
Note:Sometimes upon crash you may not need to use breaching charge to make hole in hull because it may already be there (it's never on the same side of UFO)

1. really? I thoguht it was only the hull that was indestructible. The reasoning/justification for this iirc was that you required aircraft mounted weapons to make a dent in it in the aircombat so poking at it with a handgun shouldn't destroy the hull in the developers mind.
2. Are you sure about this? I wasn't aware there was a tag for "only takes damage from breaching charges". Reasonably from a game mechanic point of view it should be possible to shoot at the spots indicated in fire in the hole untill they are destroyed.

Regarding the second question, guns can be used to destroy the UFO hull segments. They just have a lot of HP (1500 in total). The advantage of using a breaching charge is simply that it one-shots the hull, so you don't have to spend several turns slowly wearing it down.

(This is slightly ironic, since I went to the trouble of making a "damaged" image for all the hull segments if anyone actually cared to shoot them up instead).

This said, late-game weapons will chew through the hull pretty quick (two MAGstorm bursts will shred the hull 100% of the time).

thanks for clearing that up wcraige ^^

No problem.

Also, the vanilla interior walls are indestructable as stated above. I changed this in Fire in the Hole too, although I think I need to buff the HP values a bit (I accidentally destroyed an interior wall with a basic LMG the other day, which seemed a bit lame).

Is making interior walls of UFOs destructable but with say 500 HP, just an XML file change? That would be with no damaged tile graphic but use the broken jumpable wall tile graphic for a destroyed wall.

You've more or less described what I did for Fire in the Hole (except there's no trace of the wall left when its destroyed. I like your idea, though; I might steal it!)

It can be done via an XML change, yes. Although it might be easier using the submap editor. This said, you'd need to download the map tiles from the GH forums as in the game they're packed in an archived file and you can't access them by default.

Awhhh... so now it's not even possible to breach the hull :(

not without the mod no.

Sounds like you liked to blow your private entrances in the command center of the large UFOs in the first XCOM ('94), too :)

Oh, how I miss the guided superrockets...

In the original game, only one thing could breach UFO hulls: The blaster launcher.

Please tell me it's still in the game.
