I prefer to play these games with minimal main menu interaction which is why I like to play Ironman :). It's not something I want to do on the first playthrough though.
Regardless of how strong of will you are the developers goal is to make it fun and challangeing for everyone, even those weak of will. I assume that those that savescumm in the long run ruin their experience more than the experience is ruined for those that find a quicksave convenient and lacking. So balancing one against the other I would assume that it is in the developers interest to not encourage savescumming, more so than making an already existing function (as bati puts it) more convenient.
It is not about judging what anyone does in their own home on their own game. It's to make the game as enjoyable for as many people as possible.
As for me, as time goes by, I have more and more games in my backlog and wishlist. If a dev, knowingly or not, caters to the "scum-callers" and restricts my saving options, I will give my money to other people, simple as that. This includes checkpoints and save locations. I will not suffer any frustrations because I have options. And one thing I value more than the cost of the game is my time. I will not waste it replaying long portions because other people think their own time is worthless. When you kids grow up and get a job you'll know how it is.
And still we don't know if there is a quicksave key and if not will it be added at the "official release" in two weeks. I for one am not too enclined to do n clicks and go through x menus whenever I want to save.
I don't think savescumming is (or is supposed to be) a derogatory term, nor does it mean that anyone using the practice is considered "scum". I apologize if you in anyway felt me or someone else was insulting you.
It's just a short hand for saveing and reloading frequently to avoid less than optimal outcome. (It originates with the original X-com94 I belive) And it is still possible to do so. It's just not super accessible tempting people to do so that otherwise wouldn't.
If that is the way you want to play then go ahead and do so. Unfortunately some peoples enjoyment of the game will lessen when the challange of consequences are removed. It would be in the developers interest to not make the players ruin their own fun with easy access to tempting features that aren't acctualyl fun for them.
There is no need to be offended, noone has judged you on how you play or how you want to play. It's more likely a precaution for OTHERS to ensure they do not feel dissapointed.
2) You'll never get a PC game totally stable for everyone. PC gaming simply has too many variables. So, while your only use of quicksave might be Groundhog Day replays, other people might need it as a form of crash insurance. (I'm at only 20 hours of play, and have had 4-5 crashes already.)
3) It's not a design choice in 2014, it's a technological standard. Not having it is like building a car with no seatbelts and then saying, "If we gave you seatbelts, you might drive recklessly, and we didn't want to encourage bad behavoir."
The game should have a quicksave key.
Me? I don't give a quarts farthing! I'm just trying to share a point of view.
I'm sorry if I have offnded you in someway by having a different point of view. I have not been trying to convince you of my belives, merely offering them.
huh, I would assume autosaves would help migitate that. Is that not helping for you? :(
Sharing your experiences with the dev would probably give them valuable data.
I hate car analogies on principle. I'm sorry, but just because you can draw a paralell doesn't make it accurate or useful to the discussion.
Take it up with the developer. You're free to argue it however much you want. I would suggest you do it over at goldhawks forum as that is much more frequented by the developers and you might get a proper discussion started.
I don't think they'd be that interested in it though. (I REALLY don't see what function it fills that the auto save fucntion doesn't fill)
I think you will have greater luck with Solver than with Goldhawk.
