Stun grenades against Officers, useless?
So I got back into this game again a few days ago and have been playing a few hours but now I'm on a mission to capture a live Officer.

I found him in the ships command center (of course), threw a stun grenade, walked out and let the turn go. Next turn I did the same but this time I threw 2 grenades.

This went on for 15 turns until I ran out of grenades, are the stun grenades pointless to use against them or something? I even shot him for 74 damage once while he was standing in the smoke but he sure didn't care.

So...is it supposed to require more then 25 grenades to capture him....really !?

I only tried stun grenades once; they were pretty ineffective. I have had much better luck equipping two guys in each attack group with shields and stun batons, and carrying pistols for ranged attacks. They do need to have a decent amount of TUs for this tactic to work, since usually 3 or 4 hits are needed. I send them in after all the enemy grunts have been killed, and they work in tandem, whacking one officer repeatedly until he goes down.

Also, I wasn't in a rush to try a capture right off the bat. I waited until I had Wolf armor, so that my capture guys had some minimal protection, and I had some shieldless troopers carry stun batons also, as emergency back ups.

You can also have another soldier fire a few shots at the target while the baton guys approach, trying to suppress him. Have to be careful, though, not to kill him, since that rather defeats the purpose.

I prefer the gas, epecially a rocketeer with gas. I don't think the gas works any better than the grenades, in fact it's probably worse. But the gas covers an area, and multiple gas hits seems to choke out the officer. With luck, it runs from one gas cloud and into another.

I keep meaning to try the batons, so maybe I will use them.

Stun grenades are good if you are close enough to toss one and supress the target then move in with another soldier to take care of him. Less chance to get shot at if he is supressed...

Ok I might have used the wrong word, I've always called the gas grenades "Stun Grenades" so it seems I caused some problems here =p

I meant I threw 20+ gas grenades at him.

But I think I'm just gonna kill him this time, I have done this mission before I got the Community Edition and it just seems like that mod has ruined this mission for me =p

If I recall, Officers have some sort of helm or other item that protects them from gas. Go whack them with a couple of stun batons.

Yeah it seems like that might be the only thing that will work so I'm gonna kill him in this mission and then try that the next =)

I have experienced this as well on my play through and it does seem that they are immuned to stun/gas grenades, so now i make sure I have at leats one person (normally my assault people, since they get close anywas) with a stun baton and that normally does the trick with one hit -provided he gets a succesful hit.

Always useful to have gas nades on your team (though mostly against Caesans). :sectoid:

RPG gas rockets are interchangeable with the explosive type so if you have a guy with RPG as secondary, they can carry some.

Sebillians etc. are tougher indeed, better baton them down. Generally, the soldier with the shield is good for such.

Gas grenades work against officers and leaders, it just takes more than one. Just throw one for 2-3 turns and they'll go down. It seems much safer to me than going in close to hit them especially since you can throw gas grenades from angles that prevent the enemy from reaction fires due to its wide AOE and move them back out of the UFO before they run out of TUS.

Mhm, maybe in the beginning of the game, but not for long. :TheBureauAlien:
Soon enough you'll need to hit Officers and Leaders 3 times with the baton to bring them down.

I've had 4 playthrough although only 2 completed at this point and never used a baton once.

Like I said in the OP, I threw over 20 at this Officer and he just kept running around, I even shot him for 70+ damage with a reflex shot.

And this proves what exactly? Your reluctance to use batons?
Noone says one should use batons. It is an option and if you can use it then it's all good, no?

Later enemies can take over 100 damages incurred. Expect them to require over 110 damage before they go down.

I never said that the baton wasn't an option, nor a bad one. I'm saying you can complete a playthough without them and that gas grenades/electric grenades/gas rockets can do the job just fine from a greater distance at a lesser risk. Surely, it'll take longer, especially towards endgame but your soldiers aren't at risk that way.
