Off topic Steam mod has a pinned off topic thread for legitmate free games which I stay subbed so that is how I found about this and others.

I was to much of wimp to buy this one as I heard it was more tricky than the UFO series which I am only a third way through.

Love the original Xcom, pretty lukewarm about this. Honestly, it's too hard in a bad way. I've played the original Xcom a bunch and won even on the hardest, and it is always hard but fair. Same with Terror from the deep and apocalypse with are both really damn hard (I've never finished them due to the difficulty), they always felt really hard but fair. The difficulty in this feels cheap. The aliens just snipe you from out of your view all the time, like if every mission is an original Xcom night-mission. Feels incredibly cheap.

Got it at GoG. First mission whole squad got wiped out on veteran difficulty. I laughed like a kid because it reminded me so much of the original that I play from time to time. I remember mid game having a squad get half ripped apart before they even get off the ship. That was the original, brutal and just plain unfair at times just like real combat. I love it.

Fortunately I've adjusted and am making it much farther into the game this time.

If you own the free game GOG is giving away already you do get a GOG key to give to someone. But GOG keys work only on GOG, no possibility of activating on Steam. Also these free keys have expiration date after which they're rendered unusable.

Well, I haven't got a chance to receive a free GOG key yet. That's good to know, although I have no friends who use GOG.
