How do you to safely breach alien ship?
So, my biggest problem with the game at the moment is always opening the front door of an alien ship. I can't Overwatch like in XCOM so I don't know what are the right steps. Should I smoke the enterance? Have a Sniper with high reaction on Longwatch aiming down the door a dozen squares away? Have a Shield guy crouch and an assault behind him with high reaction to shoot alien first? End result usually is shield guy gets severely wounded or melted instantly.

I also have a breaching charge mod but I haven't tried it yet. Should I use it?

for me shooting down the door or missiling it usually works for me.

So just have my machine gunners turn that to dust? Ok I haven't thought of that. I'll try that later

Nice. Also if you see and tango open the door and shoot or not do anything when the door closes aim for the spot where said tango was with a missile if possible. As that will "blow up" his expectations pretty damn hard.

Wouldn't the missile just explode on the door and do no damage?

Explodes on the door destroying it and damaging all entities and objects around it. So no it would not do no damage.

I usually setup 2 mgs and a sniper trained on the door and have all the others stack up to the side of it. The shield guy goes in first and opens the door. Then the mg guys and snipers do as much damage to any aliens as they can. Then my shotgun guy goes in for close up work, and the assault rifle guys go in after that to mop up. I take it pretty slow, repeating this multiple times, sometimes only killing 1 alien at a time.

When you later got the stun gas, a few missiles with gas = very helpful, especially in later UFOs with really bad interior space.

I like to shoot the doors open with machiengun fire.

Once inside its a real ♥♥♥♥♥, I bring a few shotguns for that reason alone.

The doors can work in your favor more than they work against you, I find. Open them from the corners to minimize your exposure, with a shield if you feel the need. Have shooters zap any aliens in line of sight. Use shooters in covered, distant positions first to draw any reaction fire. If you're running out of AP and the room isn't clear, close the door again so the aliens have to come to you before they can shoot on their own turn.

Where things get tricky is when there are aliens in the room who are around corners so you can't shoot them through the doorway. That's where the grenades have to come out. Knockout gas is great on Caesians, so-so otherwise. Flashbangs usually work except against Androns (followed by an assaulter with a shotgun). Once you get them electroshock grenades are good against Androns. Regular damaging grenades, IME, don't work well for corner-clearing because they've got a terribly small effect radius, but it's not impossible to get results.

(If you have Androns around a corner and not enough grenades to knock them out...do you have any privates you don't like? Because 'expendable decoy' may be the only option that will work.)

Just blow the door up with whatever weapon and shoot some sleep gas missiles in.

Later you'll get shields which solves the problem.
Late-game your best squad is half heavy weapon guys and half guys with shield and pistol

its safer to keep the doors shut. park a few guys couple of hex outside the door for overwatch on burst.

wait for AI to open the door, and get greeted by freedom

If only my shield guys can strafe or walk sideways. But that would be too easy, lol

I have all my rookies as Shieldbearers. Gives them strength over time and TUs, and i dont mind to much when to die trying to breach or stun. If you are looking to lose no one. Have 2 sheilds with either assaults or heavy gunners behind them. Smoke the entrance and peak and suppress, I dont always like blowing the entrance up because it can act as cover.

Breaching charge mod is the way to play for sure. Why march into death hallways when you could just blow a hole through the wall like the kool-aid man weilding flaming plasma instead of sugary beverages?

This is one area where the game fails, imo. (One of VERY few areas, I might add!)

In addition to the need to dance around getting in the door, I've tried numerous times to flashbang before charging in (as is a pretty standard "real-life" tactic for breaching any sort of fortification..)

And it seems the UFOs are designed in a way, and the aliens programmed in a way that they retreat to a corner where you can't really flash them without running into the middle of the room anyway...
