You have to lead him from the edge to the side, hitting him miltiple times.
If you get yourself cornered you will die quickly, sometimes it is unavoidable.
Killed him after around 15-20 tries.
Edit: also the status bars(health bars) look the same to me, but i knew it was the psp version from the description.
I ignored the projectiles and followed his path to land multiple blows in a single direction. Worked out well in the end.
Snapped a picy when the moment happened :D

I haven't even finished Ys1 yet. As soon as I killed him I saved and came here.
I really enjoyed this game.
Then you just have to use this technique for the rest of the battle: see what direction he's about to go in, then run in that direction BEFORE him. He is faster than Adol, so if you've aimed it properly he will fly over you, taking several hits in turn, and normally in the corners of the screen. Especially at the beginning of the battle, try to get as many of the hits in the corners as you can, but by the time he's low on health, you'll be penned into a much smaller area so you'll just have to deal with that as best as you can. Finally, always keep moving around the screen as much as you can: you can't dodge the little purple projectiles, but you can dodge the fireballs!
Make sure you equip all silver armor and the blue necklace that Luta Gemma gave you! It doesn't matter what ring you wear as they don't have an effect during boss battles.
(Though I sense I may have to do this myself if I ever decide to play through Nightmare mode...)
Huh? the psp version was easier? it seemed about the same difficulty wise to me..and the only real difference is the status bar lol..
Something the game should have taught you by now too, is that if you're not in motion you will not swing your sword. This may not be exactly true, but its true enough that standing still in his way is stupid. As others said: keep your motion in circular arcs. This avoids the primary fireballs and most of the secondary fireballs.
The only exception is when he's approaching you in the direction you've anticipated, then you pre-run in that direction and let him fly with and over you. 4 hits this way is normal and is way more damage than he does to you in the same time. Doing it consistantly will let you win :)
All this said, he was a super-hard boss. Super super hard. I'm... frankly impressed that I had the patience to learn him and beat him, haha. A testament to how good this game is!
they really only have one place to spawn somewhere on the left side of the field
