First Boss

Is this a joke? A mage floating around in flames that you have to hit like 50 times with starting equipment? I've heard the long sword makes him easier but I cant pay 2000 gold...

Farm before the shrine, you can't get the money quite quickly

Due to the way damage is calculated in this game, your have to raise your strength above an enemy's defense before you can do any meaningful amount of damage to it. For the first boss Jenocres (76 defense), he will easily endure several dozen hits when you are level 4 (base strength 70), but will fall in three or four hits once you reach level 5 (base strength 100), even if you fight him bare handed.

The easiest way to dispatch Jenocres is to farm up to level 5, and just bum rush him during the fight. As long as you keep running after each hit, the flames will not be able to kill you before you win.

at level 5 with the long sword, you can defeat him in 2-3 hits

I got this now. Lot of grinding but he went down like a chump at L6. Thanks for the help people!

yeah, that one took me a long time, too. I managed it after 10-12 tries at level 4 with the Long Sword.

That was the only bit where you sort of have to grind if you aren't insane good at the game.

So long as one completes the Luta Gemma sidequest beforehand, little additional grinding is needed for this boss (at least, in newer versions of the game). For money, finding and selling the hidden Gold Pedestal (at the edge of the small pond on the Minea Plains) is enough to buy one of the second level pieces of equipment. As others have noted, you'll want the Long Sword (armor is actually useless in this fight), but it only helps as early as level 4.
