You're probably thinking of Ys III. Which was completely remade (not even a sidescroller anymore) as Ys: The Oath in Felghana, which is actually a really great game.

I doubt it. I had Ys 1 on SEGA MAster System, It was a good game, but this remake is just amazing.

My mind keeps saying I played this on an old gaming console.

Very likely, as it was released for a bunch of different systems, with the Turbo CD version probably being the most commonly played (from what I've seen others post, at least).

I'm old enough to remember this so here's what I can tell you.... Neither Ys 1 and 2 were ever released on Super Nintendo. Ys 1 was first released on console as a stand alone on Sega Master System in the late 80's and while it was OK, it wasn't considered a hit. They didn't even bother with bringing Ys 2 for SMS.

It wasn't until Ys Books 1 and 2 came out on TurboGrafx CD-ROM in the early 90's and that version is what made it a hit because it was one of the first games on CD and back then CD games with real music, cinematic cut scenes, storytelling, and lots of voice were considered amazing.

Perhaps the reason this game is not that great compared to SNES games is because a lot of SNES RPG type games were influenced by it.

This game was also on Turbo Graphix 16, it a very old classic game. I like the way they adapt the new version.
