Ys I
Finished Ys I a while ago and GOOD F*CKING GOD it was a horrible experience
Admittedly, my first Ys game I ever completed was The Ark of Napishtim (PS2), which was an okay kind of game. Because it's the 6th entry of the series, naturally I was curious how the story first started. Bought Origin and Ys I & II during a sale and enjoyed Origin despite the game forcing you to re-play the whole game again 3 times for the canon plot and ending.

However, Ys I & II were amazingly bad. Player who call this a hidden gem of the past must be wearing nostalgia glasses that are 10 meters thick because everything besides the sound and music were below average. Bump system? What kind of drugs were the developers smoking?

I also think it's kinda fun that you can use the bump system with only one hand.

I've actually recommended Ys 1 before to someone who has only one free hand while gaming because he was holding a baby with his other.

But after reading your comment I understand that You didn't played classics? Or You think that Interplay and Black Isle work shoudn't be compared to Bethesda and Obsidian?

I never played the first two Fallout games since I was still in elementary school back then and I didn't have a PC growing up. I know I can play them on Steam nowadays but the game looked a bit outdated for my taste. I guess the same could be said for Ys I & II. Maybe I was expecting too much for a game that came out a couple of decades ago. Maybe that's why I liked Origin and not I & II.

Ys I & II definitely have better combat during boss battles than Fallout 1, 2 & 3. Dunno about 4 as I've yet to play it.

Ys I & II have better gameplay than a lot of more modern RPGs.

Umm, debatable? But whatever floats your boat, I guess.

Diebuster eredeti hozzászólása:
"The bump system GOES AGAINST EVERYTHING US GAMERS ARE USED TO, IT'S INHERENTLY BAD" just reads like "I suck at getting used to new gameplay concepts".

I sincerely hope you're just pulling my leg, here. If not, then I guess we play very different types of games growing up.

I never played games like this growing up though.
The bump system is great, I see this game as a pinball with some layers of an Action RPG

Well, I understand your issue with classics - even if those are considered to be the best video games ever made. Although in my case is that I didn't get used to play the old school of isometric cRPG. I'm also not a big fan of turn-based combat (because of that I turned back on one of my favourite series, Disciples; a dark fantasy TBS made by Strategy First).
I was also in elemetary school in 90' and the most games I played were some old sh17 released for one of the NES rip-offs (Pegasus) and a few titles on my PS1.
Then, several years later I was more interested in classic PC games, although the oldest one I finished is Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. I would recommend to play it (just because of MC, he's a good change for lawful-dumb protagonists and player have to swing the sword to damage enemies).

And if it pisses you off that much just play 2 only since you can shoot fireballs.

But two last bosses requires bump-system to defeat them (they're magicproof).
Except Ys II lets you bring an item into battle, so for the first of those bosses, just bring a decent healing item, and it shouldn't be an issue.

There's a revival item in Ys II as well that's 1 time only use. You also get a spell before the final boss that basically acts as a second health bar. The revival item also restores MP, so you effectively have a little under 4 lives during the final boss if you don't use it before that(the Shield spell uses MP even when not being hit).

That's pretty much enough to easily trivialize the last boss, even if you're not wearing the item the game tells you to wear to weaken the boss..

So for the few times that you actually need the bump system in Ys II, you have items or revival to help you out. Though if you're challenging yourself to not use items, revival, the Shield Spell, or the item to weaken the final boss, then it can be kind of challenging. I've only managed no items(which covers no revival as well) and no Goddess Ring, but not at the same time. Trying to combine the 2 restrictions or even do all of them seems out of reach for me.
So, you didn't like it because of the bump system? Didn't you know it was like that?

For me that's nitpicking but what the hell, it's a remake of a 1987 game. I always liked it that way.

I still think the game hold it's own today.
it is a 1987 game
about the bump system, what other games besides Ys I & II use it or something like it, both in this series and others?
Well, let's see. Wanderers from Ys is a side-scrolling platformer with RPG elements (or other way around).

Mask of the Sun returns to Bump System and top-down camera.

The same gameplay is in Dawn of Ys (although both Ys IV games are not duology like Ys I & II, but different titles that shares characters and some plot schemes). I've noticed that Dawn of Ys has voiced dialogues. For that period/generation it wasn't usual. Also, cutscenes/portraits looks pretty good.

And finally Lost Kefin, Kingdom of Sand - top-down perspective, but without Bump System.

Another interesting thing that there are remakes made by Taito for Ys III

Ys IV: Mask of the Sun and

Ys V relesead for PS2 in Japan. The first of them contains gameplay similar to the original version (2D side-scrolling). The later two games have isometric view, but still no Bump System.

I'd personally like to give them a try, especially to remakes of Ys IV & Ys V and compare them to Nihon Falcom works (Ark of Naphtism and later titles). If only these games were translated...

I think Ys V has been fan-translated.

I did a research to confirm this, but from what I found the translation is only for SNES version.
Is there even a non-SNES version of Ys V?

There's a PS2 "remake" of sorts by Taito, just as there is for Ys III and Mask of the Sun. They're a bit strange but not necessarily bad, especially in the cases of Mask and Ys V.

Now I'm not sure if my English is that bad, or You skipped that part of my post. I even provided videos with gameplay for those remakes (and for the original versions as well).

*the feeling of beeing usless intensifies*

Mayby I shouldn't use url script, I forgot that steam allows to add video with youtube player.
