Okay, I'm so lost. I know Lute gives you an item for it when you read the books, but how the heck do I read them? Do I really have to go all the way back to Zepik village to that old hag just to read these 2 books for me?

If you're already in the Darm Tower you can't go back out anyway.

IIRC it's something or someone in the tower itself?

You equip the monocle and then read the books

After talking to Reah in the tower, read the books you haven't read by equipping the monocle.

Then talk to Luta Gemma on Floor 11, and he'll give you the Blue Amulet, which lets you access Floor 25.
