Can't get the game to run full screen...
This is infuriating me. I just picked this game up and have spent about 25 minutes just messing around with the display settings.

The game will only launch in a window, even when the "full screen" box has been checked.

If I uncheck the "full screen" box, the game launches in full screen, but is zoomed so intensely that only the top left portion of the title screen is visible. This happens at any resolution and regardless of whether "maintain aspect ratio" is on or off.

It's like the options aren't actually doing anything. Yes, I disabled the Steam cloud.

How do I make this work properly, in full screen, on a 4k TV? I really don't care what resolution it's running in as long as it's filling the screen and not distorting the image.

EDIT:

I bought the GOG version a couple of years ago and that one launches and works just fine with no configuration options.

The last person who had trouble running things on a 4K display had a thing called Special K running on their computer. Just wondering, do you?

I do not. I'm not even sure what that is.

Seems the issue is due to the scaling I have enabled. I keep my desktop at the TV's preferred 4k resolution, and leave the recommened 300% scaling on, because I can't really read or see anything on the computer if I don't.

If I leave my desktop at 4k, with scaling on, launching the game at 4k scales the game itself, and it becomes unplayable, as the screen is zoomed in to the extreme top left of the game image. Turning scaling off fixes the problem, and I can play in full screen. The problem of course is that I have to turn scaling off to play the game, and if I need to tab out to do something else, I can no longer read or see anything on the screen.

The game should not be scaling just because my desktop is set to do so. I've played hundreds of other games that allow me to adjust the resolution of a game independently of what my desktop resolution/scaling settings are, and other games are not scaling. I hardly play any games set to 4k, because the text/buttons/etc. get too small for me to comfortably see. But I still don't have to muck with my desktop resolution to play those.

Even the GOG version of this game doesn't scale. I can launch that right up and have no issues. Don't need to disable scaling or anything. Why doesn't this version work the same way? It's the same game on the same display on the same computer.

I remember Sara (the programmer) saying that eventually the GOG and Steam versions of all the Ys games will be the same, and even have cross-compatible achievements. I wonder whether it's been done for this game yet...

I couldn't find one, but if there's some sort of Nvidia control option to have this particular game ignore the resolution scaling, that would be ideal.

Kinda strange, I mean that game is technically a port of a port of a 2001 PC game (this is the port of the 2009 PSP version)

What's the game's resolution, maybe it has something to do with your screen resolution

Your problem might be a different issue, but when I changed the resolution in the config to match my screen resolution Full Screen worked perfectly

Yes, the only way I can get the game to run full screen properly is to both run the game in whatever resolution my desktop is set to *and* disable scaling, which I have on by necessity to see the 4k screen. I found this to be inconvenient, because I don't want to have to disable scaling every time I want to play this game, and I have to get out of my chair and stick my face an inch from the TV after doing so just to get the game open because everything on my screen becomes unbelieveably tiny.

As the GOG version does not have this issue, and runs just fine and dandy without requiring me to adjust my desktop resolution or scaling, I was wondering what was up with this version and why it can't just work like GOG's, or if perhaps there's some setting I don't know about to make it work.

I was also venting, because this game's config options don't really do what they say they do. When I first got the game, I launched it up and it was in a window. So I exit, launch the config, enable the "full screen" option, launch the game, and... it's in a window. The only actual way to get the game to run in full screen is to have your desktop resolution set to the same resolution as you've set the game to (not an issue for most people who play on 1080p monitors and set the resolution for most of their games to 1080p also, but definitely an issue for someone with a 4k display who doesn't run most games at that resolution...) -- and then it will run in full screen whether the "full screen" option is checked or not. So that configuration option does nothing.

As I'd rather have the Steam version than the GOG version for convenience, I'll just disable the damn scaling and buy a spyglass so I can launch the game. This is the only game I've ever had to change desktop resolution to play.

Can you try replacing the Steam executable with the GOG executable?

I have the same problem in a lot of games but I just right click on the ys1plus.exe icon > properties > compatibility tab > change high DPI settings > Override high DPI scaling behavior

Done deal. You disable dpi scaling for the individual program instead of changing your system settings back and forth.
What OS are you using?
This fix works for me in every game that has this issue.

Perfect! Problem solved. Exactly the solution I was looking for, and good to know if I ever have the issue again. Thank you much! And thank you to everyone for the input and suggestions.
