If I leave my desktop at 4k, with scaling on, launching the game at 4k scales the game itself, and it becomes unplayable, as the screen is zoomed in to the extreme top left of the game image. Turning scaling off fixes the problem, and I can play in full screen. The problem of course is that I have to turn scaling off to play the game, and if I need to tab out to do something else, I can no longer read or see anything on the screen.
The game should not be scaling just because my desktop is set to do so. I've played hundreds of other games that allow me to adjust the resolution of a game independently of what my desktop resolution/scaling settings are, and other games are not scaling. I hardly play any games set to 4k, because the text/buttons/etc. get too small for me to comfortably see. But I still don't have to muck with my desktop resolution to play those.
Even the GOG version of this game doesn't scale. I can launch that right up and have no issues. Don't need to disable scaling or anything. Why doesn't this version work the same way? It's the same game on the same display on the same computer.
What's the game's resolution, maybe it has something to do with your screen resolution
As the GOG version does not have this issue, and runs just fine and dandy without requiring me to adjust my desktop resolution or scaling, I was wondering what was up with this version and why it can't just work like GOG's, or if perhaps there's some setting I don't know about to make it work.
I was also venting, because this game's config options don't really do what they say they do. When I first got the game, I launched it up and it was in a window. So I exit, launch the config, enable the "full screen" option, launch the game, and... it's in a window. The only actual way to get the game to run in full screen is to have your desktop resolution set to the same resolution as you've set the game to (not an issue for most people who play on 1080p monitors and set the resolution for most of their games to 1080p also, but definitely an issue for someone with a 4k display who doesn't run most games at that resolution...) -- and then it will run in full screen whether the "full screen" option is checked or not. So that configuration option does nothing.
As I'd rather have the Steam version than the GOG version for convenience, I'll just disable the damn scaling and buy a spyglass so I can launch the game. This is the only game I've ever had to change desktop resolution to play.
Done deal. You disable dpi scaling for the individual program instead of changing your system settings back and forth.
What OS are you using?
This fix works for me in every game that has this issue.
Perfect! Problem solved. Exactly the solution I was looking for, and good to know if I ever have the issue again. Thank you much! And thank you to everyone for the input and suggestions.
