Also, if you enjoyed Ys III (Wanderers), then you may enjoy its remake, The Oath in Felghana.
But you can mod the PCE CD OST into the files of the Steam version.
I consider this one the most definitive because it's the Canonical one and is the most accessible one to this date
PS: Well the "modern" Ys games (from Ys VI the Ark of Napishtim) are different from the first ones. You have Oath in Felghana (Ys III remake) that uses the same battle engine with more features and better combat gameplay and Ys Origins that is a prequel of the serie.
You also have Ys Seven that uses a party fight system, Memories of Celceta (the canonical remake of Ys IV that will come soon on PC) which also uses Seven's engine and finally Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dana that uses a mix between the Napishtim and Seven engine and is the first truly 3D, behind the character camera game that allows you to both jump and switch characters
The only drawbacks are no voice acting and the games are once again seperate. There is a feature that essentially emulates the transition between Ys I and Ys II like it was on the PCE-CD, however it doesn't work on neither the Steam nor GoG versions and XSEED ain't gonna fix it any time soon (read ever).
IIRC Sara said she wants to fix it? But it's just not a high priority, since all it does is just launch the other game and skip the opening or something like that.
Personally I find the Chronicles OST on almost the same level of quality of the PCE CD (it use a studio recorded rock music for the action themes), even tho the PCE CD has the whole 80's synth music charm to it

uhhh just watched some gameplays from it on yt, gameplay doesn't look promising for me, well can't tell more till I play and try it. Looks like totally different game.
The PS2 Ys III remake looks like better candidate to play for me (still 2d side view).
Thanks for indroducing other parts of Ys series.
VI Ark and Origins looks meh for me but Seven (except graphics), Celceta and VIII looks not that bad.
Thanks man, it is the answer I was looking for.
Changes and additions sounds good, I can live without voice acting too.
Well, I will definitely give it a shot after finishing PCE version so, it vortexed me too much so far, need finish it.
Yup, sounds good.
My favourite (but didn't played much Ys games so it can change) so far is that track from Genesis/MD, that sh@t so good and fits boss fights there (You will definitely hate it if You get ear cancer from genesis/md chip music)

Thank You again for answers guys!
If you're in the mood for something similar to the platforming action of Ys III, an unrelated game called Fortune Summoners might be more like it.
And Ys III is condisered as a "meh" game in the serie with Mask of the Sun and Kefin
I'm not into loli stuff, thanks
What about Dawn of Ys? I've just finished it today, for me it was superior to book I & II (from same PCE CD console). Especially boss fights - ys I/II simple boss fights became ashamed - huuuge jump in quality there.
But anyways, I just remembered, Salt and Sanctuary is a combat-focused 2D platformer. Though both S&S and FS are more about deliberate combat, which I'm not sure Ys III is. (S&S specifically, I've heard, takes after Dark Souls in its gameplay style.)
I'm still glad that XSEED are porting Memories of Celceta on PC tho
Still get goosebumps listening to the intro https://youtu.be/KT-y7bZlpJM?t=13
I'm so very disappointed that there is no voice acting. They couldn't just port that over from the CD version? It really immerses you into the storyline! I guess I should have just took out the TurboDuo & played Ys Book I & II. The updated music is good, but seems to fall short from the CD version as well in terms of depth. I guess like they are saying above this Chronicles game is it's own 'thing'
