Bird Companion not spawning after reading letter

I cant seem to find the bird companion anywhere. I've finished the game(credits rolled). cant 100% achievements without this bird

In my case, entering the personal cave and leaving it again will often spawn the bird even when I don't want it to. Maybe try that? (It is supposed to fly out of the mailbox but for whatever reason it phases in and out of existence all over the place.)
