how does the reception tower work

i click on it but nothing happens and there is no prompt

It automatically collects any content from charged Vacuums on the same island. You fill it with Water Capsules and that will be drained once you collect the items (just go close to it).

Why build a reception tower when you auto gather everything when you enter the island?

No idea, maybe if you are not that far yet to get the materials from each island, I think you unlock the Reception Tower earlier. But yeah overall at the end the Reception Tower is kind of useless especially once you unlock the Void Vacuum, then you don't even need to leave your island anymore.

Indeed I agree.
For the skill which gather when you enter an island I think you get it very early maybe on island 2, but i could be wrong.
