DCS World Steam Edition

DCS World Steam Edition

Don't buy Flaming Cliffs 3 from ED store, it won't install to Steam DCS World
After 3 frustrating hours searching for a solution why FC3 wouldn't install into DCS World on Steam, I gave up after realising it's impossible afaik.

When you try to install it, the install path is blank (it can't autodetect DCS World), and if you try to point it to steam/steamapps/common/DCSworld it still won't find it, saying you need the latest version of DCS World to install FC3.
Yeah well I have the latest version, it's just not recognizing it as being installed because it's through Steam.

After finding a support page buried in their forums about DCS World installation issues with modules, it told me to use the mod manager to install fussy modules (like FC3).

Surprise! Mod Manager doesn't come with the Steam version of DCS World!

As a last resort, they say to use a command prompt and use the syntax of DCS_Updater.exe install <module name> to get any modules to install into DCS World.

Guess what! DCS_Updater.exe doesn't EXIST in the Steam version of DCS World.

Beyond disgusted.
There is nothing on the product page in the Eagle Dynamics store that says Flaming Cliffs 3 is NOT compatible with the Steam version of DCS World.

Thanks a bunch ED. I'm out $20.

There's a reason why you can't find Flaming Cliffs 3 on steam.

You can still play FC3 on a non-steam Version of DCS.

Is this reason listed on their product page in the ED store?
No.

How the hell are customers supposed to know about the incompatibility until they try installing it?

FC3 isn't offered on Steam (apart from the CIS region) due to licensing issues.

FC3 works great on the free base DCS World direct from the ED downloads, providing you meet the prerequisites (as detailed on the FC3 ED store page).

So basically I need a second install of DCS World just to run FC3, but still have to keep the first installation to run the Steam modules I already bought for it.

Stupid.

You can use all your keys purchased on steam with a normal non-steam installation

Really? Someone on the ED forums told me I couldn't.
Good to know they were wrong!

Yup, I got UH-1 on Steam and the key works fine on my ED installation.

To play FC3 you need original LoMAC. But LoMAC ownes UBISOFT, not ED. So after UBISOFT will release LoMAC on steam, then can be FC3 released on steam too.

Will a Black Shark 2 Key work on Steam?

Ah, that explains the anger I guess - I couldn't figure out why you were so upset.

Yes, the Steam keys work in the ED version (use 'CD Keys' on the right side of the Steam Library entry) and vica versa (even if there is sometimes a delay in getting the ED key into Steam as it's a manual upload process).

It took me a day to install non-Steam DCS World. It was a horrible mess of patch after patch and when I was installing the patches for A10, I got to something like the 3rd patch and it said to delete all previous installations of A10, defrag your hard drive then start reinstalling A10! I can finally get FC3 to work but it all took over a day and all the training videos also had to be downloaded and installed individually! If you're not gonna be buying FC3, I'd say stick to the Steam version of DCS World

You don't have to install any patches for the A-10. The patches on the ED site are for the old standalone versions.

You only need to download DCS World, and then install the A10 in the module manager.

Ok thankyou for letting me (and others) know that. But I thought I had read in this forum too, a user saying the Steam version of A10 C was way behind the one in ED's DCS World. Is this correct because that was my main motivation for installing A10 C in ED's DCS World? Otherwise, I was just going to use ED's DCS World for Flaming Cliffs 3 (buying alll of the planes featured in LOMAC seperately on Steam works out too expensive, especially when you've already bought LOMAC and FC3!) and Steam DCS World for all the other modules I've bought

This was the case before DCS World launched on steam. Now, the steam and non-steam version are on the same level and get updated simultaneous.

You can also install all the modules you've bought in steam in the non-steam version, so you have all the planes in one place. Makes it a lot easier, especially when you start to download mods etc.

Cool. Thankyou Nirvi
