DCS World Steam Edition

DCS World Steam Edition

DCS should spin off a civilian flight sim similar to MS Flight Simulator.
I was watching the footage of Nevada for DCS World 2 and the detail was amazing. I think if a 3rd party was to develop a flight sim with the DCS World 2 engine and the same standards that ED has for their craft, we'd see an amazing civilian flight sim that could make lots of money and replace the aging MS Flight Sim. There are talented and skilled people making all kinds of addons for MS Flight Sim that I'm sure, given the tools, they'd love to make content for a civilian aircraft sim based on DCS World 2. There really isn't a sim, that I can think of, that is up to the same standards as DCS World 2.

And, if it was done right, you could have some amazing scenarios if the two games could work together. Could you imaging an attack on the Western border of the US and civilian pilots having to deal with such a situation, as pilots from the DCS sim fly over to take on the enemy? It might train civilian pilots in how to deal with such a situation. It could get really interesting.

As it is a beta at present some of the buttons don't work but most do. I know this aircraft does not have all the buttons working yet but most do. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeI4kXrDt00
i finally jumped intro game it looks good most of switches gps radio and hsi switches are functional
A DCS:C-172 is all I want. :(
civ traffic and flight could be just the reason to use combined arms.just saying.

I was going to make a thread about this topic but I will just bump this one. The reason why DCS civilian airplanes would be great is the quality that you devs have. I am looking for a replacement for FSX and really wish I could give you guys my money instead. The quality and depth of your modules are unmatched by any flight game available in my opinion.:steamhappy:

There are a lot of big problems that would occur if Eagle Dynamics were to open the figurative flood-gates and let civil aviation content into DCS World.

1.) The scale of the sim is not really suited for civil aviation. The maps are pretty highly detailed when compared to much of FSX and the like but that works because the maps are much, much smaller. In order to make DCS a viable replacement for FSX, it would essentially have to BECOME FSX in the process. The size of the maps is a rather big issue.

2.) DCS lacks the detail required for satisfactory civil aviation tower communication. This is mostly because as a combat sim, it is not essential to have detailed communication with the ground but in order to make that work in a way that won't cause FSX players to get really mad, it would take A LOT of development resources.

3.) The FSX/X-Plane/P3D community may find DCS's development pace rather slow. Eagle Dynamics is not prone to allowing substandard third party aircraft and content (especially not after the VEAO debacle) so getting DCS to a point (content wise) where it could significantly compete with something like FSX is probably not worth the time it would take.

4.) Splitting the focus of DCS into combat and non-combat content (in a effort to compete in the FSX/P3D/X-Plane market would really, really hurt the pace of development for the kind of content that brought players to DCS to begin with. They would risk alienating their existing fanbase in a effort to (fruitlessly) compete in a market that is already well covered by other sims.

The big thing here is that FSX, P3D, and X-Plane exist already. Between them, a civil aviation sim enthusiast has a lot of content and a lot of options. DCS is the ONLY modern combat sim on the market and thus it seems kinda silly to turn that into YET ANOTHER civil aviation sim when we already have three going strong.
XPLANE 11 seems good.

I am hoping to buy it somewhere late 2018 when it becomes more polished.

While some arguments here against 'civillian-DCS' are correct and make sense, Airliners, FMCs and long flights are not everything.

General Aviation, in any form really, would be amazing in DCS. People mix these things up, but this does neither branch justice. Arguments like, 'small world' quickly fall apart and generally, there is always the assumption that we would need to try to compete with FSX.

FSX is dead in the water, only the last dinosaurs, afraid of change cling to it. The 'FSX' that people refer to when they bring it up in discussions, is heavily modded, has hundreds of $$$ in 3rd party products and is a nightmare to keep stable.

And anything but human ATC is useless anyway, I won't even let that count. :)

DCS is already the best (not just 'good') in all the areas that really count for flightsim, every Plane that has a few hundred nm range would flourish in DCS.

I would enjoy fly a Cessna 172 from Batumi to Tibilisi.
