Once autopilot is engaged you can select other modes.
Left-Alt + 1 is path hold
Left Alt + 2 is Altitude/heading hold
Left Alt + 3 is Altititude/bank hold
Those are the ones I remember, I believe there is also an ILS mode.
Then for Autopilot:
LAlt 1 Path Hold then A
LAlt 2 Altitude/Heading Hold then A
LAlt 3 Altitude/Bank Hold then A
So for every autopilot mode, press A after selected to activate it.
The HUD will also display an indication on the bottom left.
The indication will blink for a sec, but remain.
On 10A it doesnt seem to give an audible warning that it turned off like the 10C does.

The manual does not provided the key inputs for the A-10A as it does for the SU-25.
Actually there is no info on how to operate the autopilot in the A-10A in the manual. I checked after reading Tom S's comment above. The only time the autopilot is mentioned is in relation to HUD symbology. Strange since the manual is 104 pages...
Right you are. A-10C manual does have bit more info about it, I must have been thinking about that..
Keybindings are not often listed in any of the manuals though, usually best choice is to check what options -> controls have.
Also, please make sure that you've armed the EAC (LAlt+4) before pressing A. The LAAP will not engage if EAC is not armed.
Here's the updated checklist:
1. Make sure the autopilot (EAC) is disarmed (LAlt+5).
2. Now turn the EAC on by pressing LAlt+4.
3. Follow Air FoRCe's checklist for the rest.
