Best Config For Xbox 360 Controller
Has anyone config a Xbox 360 controller to a pefect sync with the game? If so can you share what you mapped, looking for a optimal mapped controller.

Try actual flight stick with separate throttle. Also proper pedals are recommended.

The answer to your question: impossible to achieve. The only optimal controller i know about is the TM HOTAS Warthog but basically any flight stick will do the job. And as Kazereal mentions, rudder pedals and a separate throttle his highly recommended. I would also recommend TrackIR5.

I used to fly the A-10C with an Xbox 360 controller. Guns runs are tricky are to achieve from a proper stand off distance, but not too bad for mowing down trucks and the like, after you have taken out anything that can shoot back with missiles.

The key for me was to go into AXIS ASSIGN, and then click on AXIS TUNE for the Pitch, Roll, and Rudder - setting a fairly high curve, something around 40 from memory. The analog sticks are much too sensitive with no curve set up otherwise.

The reason I used a controller, was that I wanted to make sure I had the patience and persistence to learn how work the aircraft before went out and bought a proper HOTAS and TrackIR. (Although knowing now that a TM Warthog, will re-sell second hand for a good price, its a non issue I guess).

From memory my configuration was similar to what you would do in a first person shooter on a console.

Left Analog Stick = Rudder axis
Right Analog Stick = Pitch and Roll axis
Back Button = Throttle down a step
Start Button = Throttle up a step

The D-Pad = view/look slow

Left Bumper = fire cannon
Right Bumper = fire weapon

Having said all that DCS is immensely more enjoyable with a stick and trackIR - I would even purchase the trackIR before I bought a stick.

Enjoy :) (btw checkout my tutorials for DCS they are written to get to started quickly)

Thanx for the response guys. Should I buy this instead Mad Catz Saitek Pro Flight X-55 Rhino?

The X-55 Rhino is a great choice for a HOTAS, as it has a lot of buttons which is great for anything in DCS, it's 1/2 the price of the TM Warthog, and it also has a twist action for the rudder controls, so you don't need to buy any pedals.

However, the A-10C (and some WW2 planes) play better with sticks that have a dual stage cannon trigger (the X-55 has only single stage), like the TM Warthog.

In the A-10C if you want to shoot the cannon in a concentrated area, you press in the trigger just slightly to activate the first stage, and the plane then tries to keep its course to whereever you are aiming. Then you press the trigger in further and activate the 2nd stage which fires the cannon, and this way the nose of the aircraft doesn't pitch up, so all of the bullets end up in a small area, instead creating a line of bullets as would happen in a normal strafing run. So this dual stage trigger is better for tank busting and other hard targets.

Of course on X-55 Rhino you can always hold down another button to make up for it.

If like the A-10C a lot, then the TM Warthog is the best choice, being exactly the same stick as the real thing, it even binds the buttons correctly for you automatically, and all of the tutorials refer to all of the same buttons so learning is a little easier too. I also like that the TM Warthog can be put between your legs because the base plate is very flat or can even be removed.

I am using an Xbox-360 controller myself and have a few tips.

Firstly, the left and right "Trigger" buttons are useless for anything other than Rudder, so assign them to the left and right rudder in the Axis Assignment screen. I think the axis to assign is called Joy_Z. You may need to invert the axis to get the desired result.

For the F15c, after much experimentation, I managed to get taxiing working great using Joy_Z axis for rudder, click down left stick for wheel breaks (W key), and click down right stick for Nose Wheel Manoeuvring Mode (S key). This allowed me to stear the plane on the ground and make tight turns very easily.

I have left stick axis assigned to pitch and roll, and right stick axis assigned to the look around functions so the right stick acts like the pilot's head. The unmodified DPad buttons I have assigned to camera view, so I can rotate the external view of the plane in all directions. I have Left Bumper assigned to Weapon Fire (for cannons) and Right Bumper assigned to Weapon Release (for missiles).

The A, B, X and Y buttons I have set as Modifiers to DPAD buttons. Some examples of what I have are as follows...

A+Right Bumper - Thrust Up Smooth
A+Left Bumper - Thrust Down Smooth
B+Right DPad - Release Flares
B+Down DPad - Release Chaff
X+Left DPad - Flaps
X+Right DPad - Airbrake
Y+Left DPad - Next Waypoint
Y+Up DPad - Cycle Weapon
Y+Right DPad - Cannons

Basically with the A, B, X and Y buttons as Modifiers you can use them along with Up/Down/Left/Right DPad for whatever functions you want. I still have many unassigned combinations and will fill them all in gradually as I get more comfortable with the game.

Hope this helps.

[EDIT]

I also set the START button as a Modifier and have it set up as follows, but to be honest I am thinking of reverting to Keyboard for these rarely used functions...

START+Down DPad - Start Engines
START+Left DPad - Navigation Lights
START+Up DPad - Canopy Open/Close
START+Right DPad - Nosewheel Light

You could set the BACK button as a modifier for another 4 functions.

I currently eject by pressing down the Right Joystick 3 times.

[FINAL EDIT]

Discounting the Axis analog controls (Left and Right Stick, Left and Right Trigger), if you make the A, B, X, Y, START and BACK buttons as Modifiers, you can combine them with DPad Up/Down/Left/Right, Left Bumper, Right Bumper, Left Stick Click, Right Stick Click, for a total of 6 x 8 = 48 combinations, plus another 8 for these buttons when unmodified, giving 56 possible assignments. Some can even be assigned twice. I have Right Stick click assigned to Nose Wheel Manoeuvring mode (S) and also Eject (ESC three times) and both functions work fine. I guess when I eject I am also enabling the Nose Wheel Manoeuvring Mode but it doesn't matter as I'm (usually!) in flight at the time.

you dont need trackIR to move mud, its better for dogfighting though.... and it is superior to not having it but considering I don't use one and do fine....

a lot of ppl swear you can't play without one but thats not true, I use ministick on x52 as a mouse and look around with the throttle hand while still staying HOTAS and have access to all flight controls at same time.

if your using xbox controller do not use the triggers as a throttle axis though they always reset middle which ruins it.

Agree - and they are set as throttle by default if I recall correctly, which is stupid. Use them for rudder like I said above as they are pretty much unusable for anything else (even firing).

actually your assignments for the xbox controller look really good, definetly recommend anyone with that setup to give them a shot.

but then go out and get a stick and throttle if your really liking the sim.
