Since I don't bother with public servers, I can't speak to popularity since that side of things holds no interest to me. That said, I generally favor the Syria map for USAF focused missions (the F-16, A-10, F-4, etc) since it has plenty of plausible airbases to take off from and a lot of good areas to work with in terms of potential targets. It is a pretty versatile map and is probably the best compromise between looks and performance currently on offer in the DCS map selection.

If you want to do carrier operations, the Persian Gulf map offers a good amount of space to comfortably place a carrier without it being in some absurd location (like right off the enemy's coast). It allows for long-transit missions from the boat if you want and offers enough of Iran to do some good strike missions.

Check them out on utube then make your own decision. That's the best way to do it.

Depends do you want mp/buy campaigns / make your own in mission editor. The new Iraq map is nice but being so new there's no sp campaigns to buy. The best thing to do is probably as already suggested check them out on you tube.

Dont forget. Go standalone and try them for free for 2 weeks then make a decision! :)
