[Huey questions] Joystick & sensitivity vs realism
Hi all,

I've buy Huey dcs add-on and use thrustmaster hotas t-flight x joystick with saitek pro flight rudder.

I fly with dodosim 206 on fsx because, from what i read, he is really nice with joystick travel and not as good with full hardware controll column replication.(x-plane dreamfoil seems good in this case)

one question : is the real huey as sensitive than in game or we need to setup the joystick a bit less sensitive ?

thanks,

With a joystick like that, you can probably take advantage of some curvature. The real UH-1H cyclic has no less than an 18 inch arm, if I recall correctly, meaning that you will need curvature (or an equally long cyclic at your desk) to get similar precision in your fine controls.

I have the same joystick and have no problems. You will probably have to put a little saturation on the x an y axis (85 or so) and maybe a curve (25). I find the twist rudder on the stick useless as you find yourself twisting it when you didn't know you were. I made the joy slider on the throttle the rudder which is much better.

A lot of TM Hotas users don't seem to use a curve, but it's a personal taste thing I guess. The feel of flying a real helo is very (very) different to sat at a desk with DCS Huey, mainly because of all the physical cues you have in rea life (balance, peripheral vision, etc) and the many hours it takes to get proficient. I haven't got many hours in a helo (just as a student), but I personally found real-life easier than the DCS Huey :D:. Flight simmers are quite hard on themselves in the use of 'helpers' (autopilot modes etc) but in reality there's lots of physical cues missing, especially in a helo.

Very true. That's why I don't mind using them. You can't really "feel" what the aircraft is doing. You'll know if your losing altitude or losing airspeed in a real aircraft with little doubt.

ty , i've put some curve (20) on x/y and can control a little more helo. I use trackir like (facetracknoir with homemade ir) and it had a lot of immerssion too.

Flying helicopters in the sim and flying in real life is like doing C6 spinal surgery vs cutting up vegetables for you soup. The level of precision needed to fly 1-to-1 with your joystick is up there. You can do it with practice, though.
