F5 issue
I can't get missiles to lock on to enemy acft. I have tone, missile switch s are armed, red guarded switch is armed. I don't get "locked on" or "in range" illuminated on radar screen. I am in missile mode.
Thx

- How far are you from the target?
- Which kind of AIM-9 are you using?

Sserponi...gotten as close as .3 miles
These tutorials are old, but they might still be valid and provide an answer:

Are you maintaining lock with the radar itself? I know that may seem like a stupid question but the radar is the one that gets you the locked/in range indicator, the Sidewinder missile lock itself isn't really going to necessarily impact that.

That's indeed strange.

By "tone", do you mean the ambient, "the seeker is working," noises or the louder, "the seeker is tracking," tone? If you have the louder, tracking tone, you ought to be able to launch regardless of radar cues (you can even leave the radar switched off). The range matters for whether the missile will have a reasonable probability of kill, but if you're close enough to count the rivets then you are probably in a high-PK range.

The other issue I could imagine with the lock is the aspect angle. Some of the sidewinders the F-5 can carry are old enough that they basically need LOS to the engine exhaust to track. If you are head-on aspect on the way to the merge, you might not get a lock or the lock might come too late to get the shot off.

perfect info...i am getting the seeker is working tone...not the louder tracking tone. dont know why i am not getting the tracking tone? Probably something I am doing. I have watched several youtube videos, and I think I am doing everything they are doing.

It is very important to note that since the Sidewinder is a IR seeking missile, it's relationship with the radar (and thus the radar ranging and lock indicators) is going to depend almost entirely on getting and maintaining a radar lock on the target independent of the missile's own lock tones and such.

You should be able to get "in range" indications above the radar screen even if your missile itself isn't tracking. It is all about the range the radar is reading and the mode you are in.
