2) it depends, more complex your profile is, more time it needs: personally I use T.A.R.G.E.T. Sw to create my own profiles: it is pretty easy to learn and use and usually it takes me 35min/1h to create a simple profile (including tests). Others do not use T.A.R.G.E.T. and go straigth to the DCS configuration menu to manually assign axis and buttons. Dnno how much time it needs in the second case (maybe less/maybe more).
You can also try find some pre-mad configs for warthog. Which planes are you interested in?
I'm mapping without T.A.R.G.E.T. and it's pretty easy and done quick. You really don't need to use a software for that. Setting up the F-16 for example took me about 30 minutes until the profile was perfectly fine. I use cold start and freeflight for immediate testing my controls.
Of course I have my own system of how to map things so I'm used to do that, but you'll find the best solution for you as well @OP. But to answer your hidden initial question... you can't really avoid spending some time mapping controls now and then with other modules! That's something tied to the learning process of DCS World and part of the sim.
Besides that there are very intuitive profiles for the Warthog for every module out there. Just try them and modify them to your liking!
I'm considering to switch to straight DCS due some of the planes I have (M-2000C and F-16C) does not have a full mapping of commands. However AFAIK T.A.R.G.E.T. is quite flexible: as an example it allows to map the two positions of the stick trigger or assign a function to idle position of the 3 way switch. Is this possible with DCS config too?
I've never had an issue mapping the first stage of the trigger for any module within DCS.
The 3 way switches won't work unless the module has a specific entry for it to work as a 3 way switch. Basically, some modules recognize only the "up" and "down" positions, with the middle position being unrecognized.
That is the problem: T.A.R.G.E.T. allows me to do that, but not dcs
