How do you handle cockpit controls in VR?
I've played Elite and IL-2 in VR and while Elite has the handy feature of holo menus that you look at, in IL-2 I can't map all the necessary settings to my HOTAS so I resort to SOME keyboard input.

With more modern jets I don't know how you go about all the cockpit controls. Do you guys map everything to keyboard and just memorize positioning, or is there a more comfortable way to control stuff in the cockpit using VR?

a many buttoned HOTAS helps with this.

anything non essential I "mouse click" using either my mouse or a trackball.

I'd love a Trackball in a HOTAS.

the flaming cliffs and non "clickable" are more difficult as they are purely keybound.

If your plane has true hotas. Map all hotas buttons to your hotas.
Then use mouse for rest.

I didn't realize you can use the mouse, that def makes things easier. Thank you!

I have many controls that I built and can find without looking but these days I tend to just use PointCTRL a lot more. It allows you to just point at a switch and click it. It works really well, especially when you can't remember how you mapped your controls. There used to be a waiting list and I'm not sure if that is still the case. Took me a year to get mine!

You could also look at Voice Attack, many use it in VR to activate keystrokes.

you could also use a modifier button , whenever that button is pressed in conjunction with another it'll perform a different action than it would normally do , basically doubling the avaliable buttons.

I fly helos 99% of the time, but I use a HOTAS together with a Stream Deck XL. Priority/combat functions on the HOTAS. Important/low priority functions on the Stream Deck. Works well for me.

Used to use the mouse when I was still using VR. If I ever go back to using VR I think I will give the UltraLeap a try.

VoiceAttack for the win. I actually take weeks creating the aircraft profile, doing it at the same time I am setting up the DCS control profile. I match the VA profile categories to match each DCS control category, assigning at least 4 voice commands to each action/keypress, so I don't have to remember one exact word of phrase. For instance, "Gear down;Deploy landing gear;", etc.

VA has capabilities so complex I will never figure them all out. Executes windows commands, opens other programs, etc.

I even use it to set scripts / macros, for instance in my Apache I have a voice activated script / macro that sets my cockpit and external lighting for night flight. I say "Night Flight", and it adjusts each and every instrument lighting knob one right after the other as I just sit there and watch. After each adjustment I also programmed it to tell me using text to speech, for instance "Left MPD set.....NVIS set....Countermeasure panel lighting set.....".

Also use it to recenter TrackIR and VR, and start and stop OBS.

I very rarely take my hands off the HOTAS.

For $10 one time license, best value utility out there.

Have you considered using Vaicom?
It does much of this for you, and much more.

I use the Viacom VoiceAttack Plug-in in DCS. Viacom is for communications, it doesn't do the same thing as VoiceAttack. It's primarily used for handling the radio and F10 menu.

I use voiceattack for that. I have the F10 key programmed to voice command "Radio" or "Comms", and also have the F1-F12 key presses programmed to voice commands for how they sound, for instance "F1" or "eff 1" or "F one", multiple voice commands for each so voiceattack has a high chance of recognizing one of the commands.......easy peasy.
