Anyone else just free fly?
I've been at this some years now, have every module, played around in the various pve and PvP servers, etc, etc. Now I find myself just loading up into one of my 3 favorite helicopters(Hind, Hip, or Apache) and just free flying around. Trying some low level flight, skyscraper landings, and really just dialing in my skill with helicopters. I would just do this in MSFS but DCS still reign supreme when it comes to helicopter physics.

Maybe I'm just burned out or bored of waiting for some kind of dynamic campaign to then unlock some kind of "purposeful" game loop, I don't know.

Anyways, I've been reduced to just flying around practicing my helicopter skills, and I guess I'm OK with that, because it's still the best flight simulator in that regard. Anyone else?

I honestly have such a hard time doing what you do. I always need a goal of some sort.

I typically just jump on my favorite MP servers and treat it like a fishing session. I like to take it slow and just organize a game plan and then execute that game plan for several hrs.

I just putz around in a plane or helicopter, especially when I only have 30 minutes or so. If I don't have enough time for a full mission, I'll hop on, fly around for a bit, practice landings, land in weird places (if flying a helo), look at the sights, chill out, etc.

I sometimes fly "airshow" maneuvers around airfields, or just take off for the sole purpose of landing practice.

Usually, however, I want to blow things up.

Why not play on one of the many multiplayer servers that already have dynamic campaigns of one sort or another if this is what you want?

As stated, and quoted, I have done this. It's just not that fun competing with 30 other people for the same group of targets.

i absolutely agree with this. its why i pick and choose which server and when as to eliminate that problem.

also, have you checked out any search and rescue servers and have you tried your hand at foothold missions?

I have played foothold, yes.

how many hours you have played?
Most of game only have 20~50 hours and stretch to few hundreds in multiplayer.
And DCS is no difference, not magic for your entertainment. the "gameplay loop" is the same for over 1.5 decade. it's normal you want to move on and only play occasionally every once in a while.
I spent way more time in modding and reverse engineering.

I tend to free fly in msfs2000. DCS seems to grab my attention in "bursts" where ill play but then shelve it for a few months.

it's getting close to my personal wants/needs but isn't *quite* there yet.

I free fly in the Huey and Warbirds.
Fast low level flying in warbirds is very fun.

Last time I was exploring the Mirage F1. More I play with it, more I like it.

Helicopters are so satisfying just being flown around that I'll do this myself as well, ocassionally.

The counter to burnout is change. Might be just chilling in free flight for a while, or stepping off for a bit. Or changing an airframe, changing what you do in terms of learning goals.

For me that was a change to a bit more serious flying, as in, actually planning a mission (in context of a campaign) with a group of like minded individuals, deciding on SOPs (USAF manuals are public), more realistic comms (brevity docs are public), tactical formation flying (T-38C manual is public), tactics (...USAF manuals are, again, public!), getting the flight plan done, adjusting the loadout for mission goals, drag/fuel/flight time and profile, time on target, etc. Learning to be a wingman, to be a lead, to fly in context of a 2 ship, 4 ship, or a few elements...

There's a huge amount of things that goes into blowing those BMPs or bandits up. Does it take up time I could spend flying? Well, yeah. But that also means the flying time is quality flying time, flying with purpose, training for specific things that we're going to enounter during a campaign, with a sense of suspence and risk. No respawns during the mission, unless the whole group does another sortie. ;) It's not just you anymore, though your mistakes can sure make a difference and you can measure success not only in targets destroyed but in tasks well done, good decisions, good comms, good flying (on parameters), in landings, in calculating the fuel well, in good SA... Ideally, but at the beginning it's of course one big confusion until you get used to it. Each sortie will teach you something, usually by making it obvious that there'sstill so much you still can't or don't know how to do. ; )

There's a lot of squadrons out there. Some good people in many of them. Something people flying solo feeling a burn-out coming might consider.

I have to say, even though I'm barely at the beginning of the road, flying out solo feels dull now. Not having a wingman is like not having an arm and a leg.

Honestly i am mostly a free flyer myself, no idea if because i prefere it or because i still am learning how to fly the planes (only own FC3 so far and recently got the thrustmaster warthog and rudders) but seeing how i mostly play freeflight in Vtol VR aswell, i think it's at least partially cause i simply want to have a nice flight...

My schedule at work is changing and I'm looking to get back to DCS. Sim racing has stolen my attention from it. I'm on the west Coast so if you're interested in getting some missions in then let me know.
