The only real draw of the Nevada map is if you specifically want to simulate the training that happens in that area. It isn't a very useful combat map and while flying around in Vegas is fun, it isn't exactly long-term fun.
There are folks who really, really get into simulating the training that happens there but for me, it wasn't the most useful map. I vastly prefer Syria and the Persian Gulf maps in pretty much every way.
MP wise its barely used.
I had fun with it, but I only hop on when a campaign requires it. Occasionally I will have a visitor who wants to try VR, and I'll usually put them in Vegas. Aside from that, I don't really fly on it. It's also the 2nd oldest map in the game, and looks like it.
That being said, there are some pretty good SP campaigns that take place on it. The Mirage 2000 Red Flag campaign is excellent. The Iron Flag for the A-10CII is relatively boring, but it's a wealth of information on the Warthog systems, followed up by missions to use what you just learned. The Viggen has a free Red Flag campaign that's solid (it used to be a paid campaign from Bunyap, but they added it to the Viggen's default campaigns). Zone 5 mimicked Top Gun training, setting you up with 1v1, 2v2, etc. while teaching you about the Tomcat.
I just started Speed and Angels, which so far seems to be similar to Zone 5. But I know you swap to the Marianas map at some point, as I think there are some "real" (non-training) missions.
If those don't sound appealing, then definitely skip the map.
Training sounds boring until you play something like Baltic Dragon's Mirage 2000 or A-10C training campaigns. They are amazing and incredibly immersive.
I had the same question long ago and don't regret purchasing this terrain. Sounds like you already have 'other desert' terrains. If not, Persian Gulf would probably be the better first buy.
If you plan to play these campaigns or want to create your own practice missions while studying a (new) module (or just keep you "combat-ready" between 2 MP sessions), then the NTTR is your map.
Otherwise ditch it ad buy something else.
I'm just itching for a new map and waiting for South Atlantic or Sinai to get improved before buying them.
I don't really get the hate. It's way more interesting than some random area in Michigan or something. I just wish it included more and they expanded it a little.
"No reason to have it"? I could contest that there is no reason to even have any PC games period because it isn't part of a bare necessity for survival, or something along those lines.
