DCS mainly focuses on fast-movers and helos.
So try and do whatever works for you.
Absolutely, Dinput allows you to freely map axises. You can play DCS with a Controller. Or a Rockstar Guitar if youre crazy enough.
Would you really even need a 3rd party software? I'm pretty sure DCS would recognize the buttons on a yoke and wouldn't be surprised if it recognized the push pull and turn as the X/Y axis.
That's what I'm saying. That's why if I was the OP I would map it and give it a try. If you've used it with other games, are comfortable with, and developed muscle memory you may be successful.
Just out of curiosity I would like to see the OP map it to something like the prop that comes with game, or any of the older jets and see how it responds.
You never know until you try it.
Like I said if I see one, on a marketplace or pawn shop etc, cheap I'm going to try it just for the heck of it.
Oh yeah I probably shouldve been more clear on that!
Dinput is just the standard API to read controllers/joysticks/wheels/etc (compared the limited Xinput for xbox pads on windows).
So what I wanted to say is, you really dont need 3rd party anything, because DCS uses Dinput natively, and that system is freely configurable by nature^^
Try it and let us know.
A flight stick is nothing more than an input device that provides immersion in the game along with a certain amount of ergonomic value. As stated earlier, I think any input device with an X and Y axis could work, especially if you have experience with it.
I have a feeling it may work better than we think.
I'm not sure I would start with something like the F-16 though. I would try a warbird personally, or maybe one of the older trainers.
If I see a yoke somewhere, garage sale, pawn shop, etc, I'm going to definitely try it just out of curiosity.
Give it a go, it wouldn't hurt to try.
Would strongly recommend not to do that. Trainers are pointless. Just get an F-18 if you want an easy to fly plane for learning.
And warbirds are just kinda meh in DCS. Cold War is where DCS rules.
And I would strongly recommend considering what he is saying as stupid.
Under normal circumstances he has a point, but when trying something out like flying with a yoke you want to start with something slow, forgiving, and not extremely costly.
Warbirds aren't the best part of DCS, but if I'm trying out something I have no idea how it will turn out the last thing I would want to do is spend money on the most expensive module in the game.
Your response is based on normal circumstances, flying DCS with a yoke is not normal.
I just hate it when people say stuff like that. Trainers exist in reality for a reason, but they make little sense in games besides roleplaying. So stop trying to force it onto newcomers.
All the cold war planes with FBW are easy to fly and learn. The F-18 is easier to fly than any trainer in DCS.
And if "eas to fly" is the rule, then Warbirds are the worst thing you could recommend. Especially if the yoke makes controlling the plane harder (no clue if it actually does).
F-18 is 40 bucks with 50% sale, and will give you everything DCS has to offer. Trainer/cheaper Warbird are 25-30 bucks, not a massive difference, but much less content.
And otherwise OP could get a Mirage-2000 for ~25 bucks. Versatile and eays FBW plane that lacks guided bombs. Or a Mig-21, which is more challenging, but still easier than many warbirds.
Or Flaming Cliffs 3.
