Hardware related question about Logitech G X56 Hotas
I plan to buy a new hotas, and generally the Logitech G X56 really "speaks to me", and I know that the stick of that uses hall effect sensors, which i want, but i can not find anything about the throttle side of it. Does someone around here know if the x56 uses potentiometers in the throttle/s or hall effect sensors aswell?

Considering the hotas costs a bit over 200 bucks, i'd hope it does not use any potentiometers that might break down after some use...

(mods, please put this into the right category if general discussion is incorrect)

The throttle does use potentiometers for each throttle axis. Speaking as someone who owns and has put extensive hours on a X56, I don't think you are going to have issues with the throttle potentiometers. Obviously it would be nice if it had hall effect or similar sensors for all axis controls but it is a $200 HOTAS and that is just how things are going to be in that particular price point.

On a somewhat more general note. I know that there is a lot of discussion in the online flight sim/HOTAS scene about sensors versus pots and that particular discourse can make it seem like pots are always doomed to fail quite quickly and easily. In the case of the X56's throttle axis pots, this hasn't been my experience and it doesn't really seem to be a documented, verified issue overall.

Again. The X56 is $200. complete HOTAS setups in that price bracket are all going to have compromises to keep the price low.

Potentiometer wear out start from few thousand of rotations. It's a probability stat. It various, It's a factor users can't really control. ghosting and pot drifting do happens. And very likely it will at least last over RMA by design and how supply chain work now days.

If you can soldering. It was not issues. It just annoying and inconvenient when few years later.

There is no way to tell really. My warthog is near 7 years old. Except hall sensor almost every single button i and switch is out and I have to replace them with most common consumer level switches and lot soldering and hot glueing.

Pot is just one of many components that may have issue earlier.

I have racing gear and flight gear and lots of consumer level gadgets. Modern consumer level stuff rarely last. Even industrial one we used in work it just we have to try fix it first before we throw them into the trash. Expensive or cheap..sad reality.

Since Logitech took over saitek and updated the X56 the old issues of ghosting have been solved unless you have a cheap motherboard that shares it's USB channels.

Apart from that, I'd say the only downside is the throttle friction system simply works on a viscous grease compressed between two slices of plastic; it's a terrible design and is not consistent at all and takes a good working backwards and forwards to even start getting a good feel on the throttle resistance.

But overall, for the price, it is best in class.

Pots in throttle lever will overlive much more than pots in stick. Because throttle is much less in motion than stick. That's why pots for throttle are usually good enough. But X-56 have one issue. It have problems with ghost inputs when is not powered enough. For that reason using external powered USB hub is recommended.

IMO the VKB gladiator with T16k-M throttle is better Price-quality combo than X-56

Depends on what one is individually looking for. The VKB Gladiator stick is obviously better than the X56's stick but the T16k throttle lacks a good chunk of the functionality that the X56 has.

Honestly? For the $200 price point, the X56 is a valid choice. It isn't perfect and there are real considerations to take into account but it is still a solid HOTAS in that particular price bracket.
