+1 for F-5E Tiger.
Better radar and much easier to fly.
Less weapons too, you can load up the 21 with 6 heaters and it can use beam riding missies and even some bad Fox 1s. Also have beam riding anti ground/ship missiles.
The F5 has 2 heaters and that's it. Very good dogfighter. But 21 is more capable in everything else. Much harder to fly of course.
Why did you find the L-39 boring specifically? I don't ask because I agree or disagree but more because answering that question will perhaps help narrow down what you are really looking for.
While the L-39's lack of speed is a serious issue, it does share some commonalities when it comes to weapon system capability. Obviously it isn't exactly the same but they all generally favor manual/unguided bombing, rocket employment, and the gun. None of them have any kind of HUD, INS navigation, or any major weapon employment assistance. Again. I am not saying they are all exactly alike or anything but really thinking about what you specifically find boring about the L-39 might help you choose what you get next.
Both F-5 and Mig-21 will do much better in terms of speed than L-39. Mig-21 is a definite winner in this category.
Neither the F-5 nor the Mig-21 (as implemented in DCS World) have any sort of bomb computer. The F-5 at least gets laser-guided bombs, which makes it capable of bombing with a spotter. The Mig-21 has a beam-riding air-to-ground missile, which is serviceable but dangerous to use.
I guess the Mig-21 has tactical nukes, which would make it good for base-killing. But they are so poorly modelled that you won't feel any satisfaction from using them.
But honestly, hearing your complaints about the L-39 makes me wonder why you aren't going for modern options like F-18/F-16/F-15? That sounds more like what you want.
So outside of the speed issue, the F-5 and MiG-21 rely largely on similar manual bombing techniques. Granted, they can carry bigger bombs but you will not be destroying entire enemy bases either way.
One thing to note. Manually using rockets and bombs isn't luck, it is all about following the proper procedures. There are tables you can refer to that show what starting altitude, dive angle, diving speed, release altitude, and sight pipper depression settings you should use in order to get (reasonably) accurate bomb/rocket runs. It takes practice and discipline but it is totally doable.
For the reasons you outlined, it doesn't sound like you will enjoy the MiG-21 or the F-5. I know the early Cold War stuff is super trendy because of Enigma's server but it doesn't sound like the very hands-on, manual nature of the MiG-21 and F-5 are going to be your cup of tea.
Or just download the A4 mod, can still carry more bombs than those 3 cold war planes, can use anti radar missiles, cluster bombs, has a bombing computer. It does lack any type of BVR weapons, but can carry more sidewinder than the F5.
The question wasn't about advanced technology but it's ability to do damage.
F4E can carry 4 times the amount of ordinance. Since OP apparently wants to blow up an airbase. You'll need a lot of boom boom.
