I'm waiting for the engine upgrades to jump back in.
In OpenXR it's OK. Hope future performance updates will make it even better, but it was always a tough cookie to run in VR.
Depending on headset and computer your experience might be easy, or hard to get a decent experience. Multi-threading seems to be right around the corner and will probably help either some or a lot for vr users
I use Reverb G2. The only mid priced headset left. But rumours say HP is pulling out of VR, so soon you'll either have to buy those stand alone headsets like Quest 2 or Pico 2. Or go to $1500+ headsets.
One thing to note about VR though is that because you have little peripheral vision and turning your actual eyes doesn't accomplish much checking your 6 is a bit of a pain in the lower back. You have to twist yourself much more than you really should.
G2 uses a fresnel lens system, looks great in center, blurry toward the edges. The comment about peripheral vision is very true because you really have to twist your head around to get a clear view of an object.
Another thing is that even with 4k, you really notice a lack of fine detail past a few hundred yards. Your cockpit is superb, and then you look outside. :( The latest vive pro has maybe 12% better pixel density, not really a worthwhile upgrade. The Varjo is significantly better, and uses a different lens system that is clearer around the edges, but that a different price tier and you would definitely need a 4090 for that.
I use the thrustmaster TWCS throttle. Lots of options, plus a rudder bar, which works fine.
I would consider upgrading to the warthog system, but how does feeling around blindly on the warthog throttle to use the base controls work out in VR?
I've edited the settings to make it work, but fixed wing at fast speeds could use more frames. Rotary is still great, though (depending on map).
That said, VR in this game is something to behold -- I will not play this without VR.
Give a big thought to peripherals, though, as VR is limiting on how you interface physically. Voice attack + Gunfighter MCG + Mongoos T50CM3 + trackball mouse velcroed to the side of my throttle base has worked well for me.
Could not put it any better.
Fingers crossed for VR DLSS and multithreading getting us there in a few years.
In the meantime - I'm doing fine with pretty high settings on G2 and 3080.
