My personal value product for this would be the Thrustmaster T.16000, which I use more often than my Warthog.
After that I'd say Saitek X-56 Rhino is a great choice for flight and space sim games that need a little more than a stick (hotas system with 6dof controls).
If i had the money i would get it, but i don't, so im limited to my xbox one controller for now. I guess this is more or less Rip.
DCS is playable with a controller but more enjoyable with a stick.
My controller can plug into a mini usb and play on my PC. If that helps any, i just want a better config then the current one i have right now. I can land and take off but trying to shoot anything is like, nope, sorry you wanna be blasted out of the air, not fun at all. I'll look at the config and try to rebind some stuff tho.
And yes, xbox buttons appear not to be set in the default profile.
Buttons are generally the limiting factor though, even with joysticks / hotas.
So you'll end up deciding on also using the keyboard or the mouse along with the axis input of your choise (here a gamepad).
As for the mouse: you could put the head look on the right stick and use the clickable cockpit with the mouse.
As for the keyboard there are shortcuts already pre-defined.
After a while you'll find out the more important buttons (e.g. weapon launch etc.) for you and can place those shortcuts on your pad. Sadly I can't contribute more since I've never seen anyone offering their gamepad profile for download.
